Why Joanna Vargas' Magic Wand is Worth It

Why Joanna Vargas' Magic Wand is Worth It

Hello and welcome to Worth It (opens in new tab). Of course, spending money on makeup and skin care is a risk, but trust me, this beauty editor will only recommend what I wholeheartedly believe is worth every penny. Because you deserve the best. Keep reading to discover the one product you don't want to miss, and catch up on the latest Worth It breakdown here (opens in a new tab).

It's possible that a trip to the spa to indulge in a $300 facial is not your reality right now (certainly not mine). But thanks to Joanna Vargas' latest tool, the Magic Glow Wand, you can pamper and plump your skin from the comfort of your own home. Here's how it works: the USB-powered handheld device has four settings, all of which give targeted treatments (don't worry, I'll get to that). The first setting, hot mode, stimulates skin circulation and removes excess sebum and buildup; the second setting, hot + massage mode, is similar to the hot mode, but helps products such as face masks and serums penetrate deeper through massage. Cool mode instantly soothes inflammation and calms redness. And the last setting, cool + massage mode, adds the effect of lymphatic drainage, unclogs pores, and reduces the appearance of enlarged pores.

The device is safe enough to use on a daily basis, making it a real bargain. After thoroughly cleansing the skin, apply a face mask or a generous amount of serum and use the setting of your choice. Just don't try to use this tool on bare skin. Because a barrier is always needed. The brand recommends that you keep this device on the targeted area for 2-3 minutes to really experience its magic. And to always blend the product into the skin in an upward motion (you don't want to accelerate the sagging process). So use this tool in the same way, lifting and gliding.

I'm not at a spa when I close my eyes and try to imagine myself relaxing in a fuzzy robe on a heated bed, sipping cucumber water under dim lighting. I am in the midst of a global pandemic, which is the least of my worries, but that doesn't mean I don't have dreams for girls. So I took it upon myself to bring the spa into the bathroom. I had a Zoom meeting with Vargas, an esthetician beloved by Jessica Alba, Julianne Moore, Mindy Kaling, and others, to learn how she personally uses this tool. Some highlights: Vargas told me to use an exfoliating or clay mask for the hot mode, a cream mask or sheet mask for the cool setting, and an extra pump of serum for the cool + massage setting.

Since I only had so much time, I decided to try all the settings in one night. I combined Tata Harper's Resurfacing BHA Glow Mask (open in new tab) ($65) with Hot Mode (102.2°F) and worked my way up, starting with my jawline. I tried to wait patiently for 5 minutes before switching settings, but I couldn't help but upgrade to hot + massage mode immediately. It was worth the rush. Not as good as the esthetician's magic hands, but close. After removing the mask, I layered on Dr. Barbara Sturm's face mask (open in new tab) ($120) and switched to cool mode (55.4°F). I loved the way the titanium plates felt refreshing on my sensitive skin. Afterwards, my complexion felt plumped up, noticeably brighter and firmer. I signed up for iS Clinical's Hydracool serum (open in new tab) ($94) combined with the Cool + Massage mode (41°F).

To my surprise, my hands did not tire of holding this device until the very end. As promised, it is really light and lasts over an hour on a charge. I've already emailed all my friends and am plotting how to fit it in my carry-on luggage (if I ever travel again).
