Princess Diana (open in new tab) always knew that her eldest son, Prince William (open in new tab), had what it took to be a great king.

In November 1995, the late Princess Diana gave an explosive interview to BBC1 Panorama (opens in new tab) about her divorce from Prince Charles (opens in new tab). During the interview, Martin Bashir asked Diana (opens in new tab) if she thought Will, then 13, should succeed Queen Elizabeth on the British throne. Instead of her father, Charles."

"In light of the marital problems you and the Prince of Wales have had, do you think it would make more sense for the monarch's position to pass directly to his son Prince William? Bashir asked.

"Then, since Prince William is so young, would you wish him to bear such a burden at such an age?
