Former first lady Michelle Obama, along with 99 influential women including Meghan Markle (opens in new tab), Madeleine Albright, and Ava DuVernay (opens in new tab), discuss why it is so important to vote in the 2020 election, Marie She spoke with Marie Claire about the importance of voting in the 2020 election. This is a cause especially close to President Obama's heart: she is co-chair of When We All Vote, a non-profit organization that seeks to close the voting gap based on race and age. In what may be the most influential election of our time, she has some important words to say about going to the polls or voting by mail.

"I vote for two reasons. First, it's something I do every election." I grew up watching my father, who had multiple sclerosis, vote in every election. My father knew how important it was to make his voice heard and to do his part to make sure we have a competent leader as president. Not just presidents, but mayors, governors, senators, county supervisors, and everyone else.

"We need all of them to have our best interests at heart. These people make decisions that affect our daily lives. From how our schools are run, to how our neighborhoods are policed, to how our tax dollars are spent. And by voting, we can elect leaders who reflect our values."

"By having all of us vote, we can take back power. That's another great reason for me to vote. Because this election could not be more important, especially in these uncertain and turbulent times. As a matter of fact, I hope that many people will begin to question the power of our vote. So we must complete our voter registration and go to the polls, either in person or by mail ballot. That is the surest way to achieve the change we seek."
