On Saturday morning, after five days of grim anticipation and uncertainty, the election was finally announced: after winning the swing state of Pennsylvania, Joe Biden (opens in new tab) became the 46th President of the United States and the first woman and first person of color (opens in new tab) to be Vice Kamala Harris, who became president, was to stand by her side.

For many, the news came as a profound relief. On CNN this morning, political commentator Van Jones shared his thoughts through tears.

"It's a lot easier to be a father this morning. It's easy for me to tell my children, 'Character is important, being a good man is important. And it's easier for a lot of people. If you are a Muslim in this country, you don't have to worry about the president not welcoming you. If you are an immigrant, you don't have to worry about whether the president is happy that your baby was taken.'

He also added that the news ignites a new chapter of much-needed and long-awaited change, especially for blacks and people of color across the country: "This is vindication for many who have truly suffered. I can't breathe'. It wasn't just George Floyd. There were many who felt they couldn't breathe."

"This is a big deal," he continued." It gave us a chance to regain our peace and a chance to reset." [He concluded by congratulating Biden and Harris on their victory: "I want my sons to see this. It's easy to cheat and get away with it, but it comes back around. This is a good day for this country. I'm sorry for the losers, but it's not a good day for them.
