Simone Biles abstains from the team final at the Tokyo Olympics.
Simone Biles left the gymnastics team final (opens in new tab) on Day 4 of the Tokyo Olympics after her vault performance. USA Gymnastics released the following statement (opens in new tab):
"Simone has withdrawn from the team finals due to health issues. Simone has abstained from competing in the team finals due to medical issues.
The exact medical issue is unknown, but the 24-year-old was forced to land hard and was seen leaving the mat with one of the team trainers. When she returned, she began cheering for her teammates on the sidelines as they performed. Biles' teammate Jordan Childs replaced Biles on the uneven bars and vault (opens in new tab). The team won the silver medal.
Olympian Laurie Hernandez (Biles' 2016 teammate and Olympic analyst for The Today Show) initially stressed on air that no one should speculate about Biles' medical problems and urged Biles' teammates to keep her urged them to continue to support her.
Later, Biles told The Today Show's Hoda Kotb (opens in new tab) that physically she is in good shape, but emotionally she is mixed and does not know if she will compete in the individual all-around competition this Thursday. Physically, I feel good," she said. Emotionally, it depends. It's not easy to come to the Olympics and be the star of the show."
At a press conference that evening (opens in new tab), Biles said she aims to focus on her health." There is more to life than just gymnastics... I want to take it one day at a time and see what happens the rest of the way."
