James Middleton recreates the cue card scene from “Love Actually” to help spread an important message.
Just in time for the holiday season, Kate Middleton's brother, James Middleton, has given us a gift by recreating an iconic Christmas movie romance scene. Specifically, Middleton appeared with his real-life girlfriend in the iconic cue card scene from Love Actually. Middleton's co-star in the video was not his wife, Alizee Thevenet, but his other beloved, Ira, a golden retriever.
Even if you've never seen Love Actually, you probably know the film's famous cue card scene. The scene, in which Mark, played by Andrew Lincoln, silently confesses his love to Juliet, played by Keira Knightley, who happens to be his best friend's new wife, using a series of cue cards, has been heavily debated for years since the original version was released in 2003, but whether you like it or not, this moment occupies an iconic position in pop culture, it's hard to deny.
Middleton and Ira recreated the memorable scene as part of a campaign for the nonprofit Dogs Trust, and instead of a secret declaration of love, Middleton's message in the video drew attention to the issue of pet abandonment.
“With any luck, there will be fewer dogs in shelters by next year,” one of the cards read, while another read, “But for now, let me say with hope and intention, because you spread the word at Christmas, dogs are for life, not just for Christmas Not just for Christmas.”
Also, while Lincoln's “Love Actually” character sticks to text for the cue card confession, Middleton uses a card with a photograph to represent this scene.
“There are many children looking for homes, including these ones,” one card read, before Middleton revealed another card with the names and photos of six adorable dogs in foster care for charity.
The Dogs Trust shared a video on Instagram with a caption announcing that Middleton, a “longtime supporter” of the charity, had officially become an ambassador for the nonprofit.
“Dogs love us unconditionally. When that's not possible, charities like Dogs Trust step in, and now more than ever they need our support.”
In the comments section of the post, the official account of Middleton dog food company James & Ella said, “Did you know that ‘Love Actually’ is 21 years old and the phrase ‘dogs are for life, not just for Christmas’ is 45 years old? Do you know that the phrase “A dog is for life, not just for Christmas” is 45 years old? He writes.
Middleton is a well-known dog lover and outspoken pet advocate who regularly features six dogs in family photos and videos shared on social media. In addition to Isla, Middleton's furry family includes four cocker spaniels, Zulu, Inca, Luna, and Nala, and another golden retriever, Mabel.
In her memoir, Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life, released this fall, she tells the story of her dog Ella, who died in January 2023.
