Keira Knightley Rides the Winter Bermuda Shorts Trend in Knee-High Boots
Keira Knightley, the Golden Globe-nominated star of Netflix's spy thriller “Black Doves,” is enjoying a long overdue renaissance, and on December 9 at a screening at the Crosby Hotel in New York City, creative director She appeared in a Chloé full-look from the Resort 2025 collection by Chemena Kamali. A cropped black velvet jacket with scalloped edging reflected the femininity of the ruffled white lace blouse worn underneath. The top unexpectedly combined a high-button neckline with a loose tie closure to reveal a glimpse of bare skin.
Nevertheless, it is clear that her velvet winter Bermuda shorts are the MVP of this ensemble. Like Knightley herself, Bermuda shorts continue to make a comeback today. Designers such as The Row, Tom Ford, and Celine were among the first to embrace the trend for Spring 2020. More recently, Bottega Veneta's Pre-Fall 2024 collection and Chanel's Resort 2025 collection accelerated the style.
However, as with most runway trends, it takes strong celebrity support for this style to become mainstream. Just a few days before Knightley, Katie Holmes wore blue shorts with black tights over them to promote the warm-weather Bermuda shorts trend. Less than a week before that, Rihanna went winter with a pair of gray denim Bermuda shorts and cowhide boots. And in November, Charli XCX revamped the summer shorts trend in her own way with slouchy black boots and a faux fur coat. [Taking a cue from Charli XCX and RiRi's styling of this trend, Knightley paired velvet shorts with burgundy fold-over boots. Both the color and silhouette were inspired by “Pirates of the Caribbean,” perhaps a reference to Knightley's breakout role in the hit movie “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
Instead of a parrot or eye patch, Knightley accessorized with a black quilted bubble flap bag from Chanel.
It was a swashbuckling ensemble that celebrated Knightley's past and present career triumphs. Her burgundy buccaneer boots and Bermuda shorts would have definitely walked the walk had she not stuck to “Black Dove” Season 2. Aww!
