Royal Expert Explains Why Kate Middleton and Prince William's Decision to “Take the Lead” is a “Relief” for Prince Charles
According to reports, Kate Middleton and Prince William have been in the spotlight throughout December, much to the delight of Prince Charles.
Just last week, Princess Kate held her annual Christmas carol concert, accompanied by Prince William and their three children (Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis). The crown prince and his beard also made a solo trip to Paris for the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, where they had a private conversation with Donald Trump.
In a new episode of Mail+'s “Palace Confidential,” royal editor Richard Eden suggested that he fully supports Prince Charles and his wife taking on a larger role. Eden explained, “I think we got a glimpse of the future this week.”
Singing Princess Kate's praises, Eden said her annual carol concert is “the highlight of Royal Week.” She continued, “And Prince William met the president-elect and carried out his duties overseas. By meeting Trump before he was officially sworn in as president-elect, Prince William demonstrated his commitment to international diplomacy.
According to Eden, William and Kate's front-row appearance in December hinted at their future roles as king and queen. He said, “It felt like they took the lead, and I would say they did it very well.
Charlotte Griffiths, editor of the Mail on Sunday, further praised Princess Kate, saying, “I think she is a real queen-in-waiting.”
People magazine also suggested that the Prince and Princess of Wales was preparing to take the throne sooner rather than later, due to King Charles' cancer diagnosis. Royal writer Sally Bedell Smith told the magazine, “The King has performed his duties with typical determination, but has had to accept limitations during his cancer treatment. As a result, William took on more responsibilities, and he and Kate prepared for their future roles sooner than expected.”
While it may not have been the original plan to succeed King Charles in the near future, there is apparently a sense that Kate and William are preparing for that transition.
“It's kind of the calm before the storm,” an inside source told People.
“Of course, Kate's health is a priority, but it has allowed everyone to take a step back and think about what's important right now.”
