Meet the “Shrinking” Cast: Who's Playing Who in the Apple TV+ Series?
Apple TV+'s mental health drama “Shrinking” returns for a second season that is guaranteed to move viewers. Co-created by Ted Lasso natives Brett Goldstein, Bill Lawrence, and Jason Siegel, the acclaimed must-see series follows a group of therapist colleagues and their families as they mourn the death of a loved one. A year after the death of his wife, grieving therapist Jimmy Laird (Segel) begins to break the norms (and some ethics) of his practice in order to make a profound difference in the lives of his patients and his own.

Jimmy is a therapist living in Pasadena, California, who lost his wife Tia in a car accident a year before “Shrinking” began. The series begins when Jimmy is reunited with his teenage daughter Alice and begins an unconventional new therapy session.
Jason Segel is an actor, screenwriter, and musician best known for his role as Marshall Eriksen on the long-running CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. He made his major debut as an actor on the classic TV show Freaks and Geeks, starred in Undeclared and Dispatches from Elsewhere, and has appeared in Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, I Love You, Man, Despicable Me, The Bride over Five Years, and The End of the Tour, among other comedies.
Working with Jimmy and Paul at a cognitive behavioral therapy center, Gabby has been friends with Jimmy since college and best friends with his wife Tia. She is a gifted counselor with a strong work ethic and became a psychology professor at the end of season one. However, she also has personal problems, including a divorce from her ex-husband Nico.
Jessica Williams grew up in Los Angeles County and got her big break in 2012 as a senior correspondent for Comedy Central's “The Daily Show,” becoming the youngest ever correspondent at the age of 22. Besides Shrinking, she has appeared on HBO's Girls, Max's Love Life” second season, the films ‘The Incredible Jessica James,’ ‘Booksmart,’ ‘Entergalactic,’ two ‘Fantastic Beasts’ films, and ”Road House.” She also co-hosted the podcast 2 Dope Queens with Phoebe Robinson from 2015 to 2018.
Jimmy's mentor, Dr. Paul Rhodes, is a respected, compassionate, and rigorous therapist who is opposed to the new ways of widowhood. He is also a bit of a curmudgeon, living with Parkinson's disease but not giving up his favorite unhealthy diet; in the first season of Shrinking, he reunites with his grown daughter and has a relationship with Julie, a neurologist.
Harrison Ford is a legendary actor best known for his role as Han Solo in the “Star Wars” series, a role he played for over 42 years. He is also known for embodying classic characters in other action franchises such as the films Indiana Jones, Blade Runner, and the early 90s film Jack Ryan. Jimmy's daughter Alice, for a year after her mother Tia's death, as Jimmy succumbed to grief and guilt Jimmy was mostly left to fend for himself. Jimmy was overcome with grief and guilt. In Season 1, 17-year-old Jimmy and his father begin to reconcile from their emotional estrangement.
Lukita Maxwell, 22, was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and raised in Utah; before Shrinking, she was best known for her role as Delilah on Max's teen series Genera+ion. Most recently, she starred in the 2024 horror film Afraid, opposite John Cho, Katherine Waterston, and Havana Rose Liu.
Sean is a patient who was supposed to work with Gabby before Jimmy asked him to. Sean, a 22-year-old recently discharged from the military after serving in Afghanistan, still suffers from PTSD and anger issues that have caused him trouble with his family. Throughout Season 1, he and Jimmy grow closer, and Sean moves in with the Laird family.
Luke Tenney, 29, is a Florida-born actor and screenwriter who first landed a major role on SYFY's series Deadly Class in 2018. He has since appeared in Paramount+'s Players and CBS' CSI: Vegas. He also starred in the upcoming drama film “Nickel Boys.”
Jimmy and Alice's neighbor Liz is superficially a prickly suburban mother who appears to be an old man with nothing, but she has a fierce affection for her friends and family. With three college-aged sons, Liz acts freely as Alice's surrogate mother while Jimmy suffers his worst grief.
N.Y.C. native Krista Miller began her career as a teen model before her breakout role as Kate O'Brien on The Drew Carey Show. She has also appeared regularly in the TV comedies Clone High, Scrubs, and Cougar Town, and has been married since 1999 to her husband, Ted Lasso, and co-creator of Shrinking, Bill Lawrence.
Derek, Liz's husband, is a jovial, positive lump of a character, and is retired by the time “Shrinking” begins. He is played by television veteran Ted McGinley, who has appeared in Happy Days, The Love Boat, Dynasty, The West Wing, and Hope & Faith. He is best known for his role as Jefferson Darcy in Married.with Children.
Jimmy's best friend Brian is a narcissistic estate attorney. He and Jimmy were estranged in season 1, but they eventually made up, and Brian married his partner Charlie at the end of the season.
Michael Urie is a Texas-born actor and Juilliard School graduate. He has appeared on stage and in films, including Modern Family, The Good Wife, Younger, Crapopolis, and the films Single All the Way and Maestro. [Paul's neurologist and eventual girlfriend, Dr. Julie Baram, has appeared on HBO's “Dream On,” CBS' “Good Company,” NBC's “Just Shoot Me,” NBC's “Frasier,” TV Land's “Hot in Cleveland,” ABC's American Housewife,” Netflix's ‘Dear White People,’ and many other TV series, and Emmy-nominated actress and former model Wendie Malick. She has also served as the voice of numerous animated films, including “Emperor's New Groove,” “The Fillmore,” and “Bojack Horseman.”
Paul's daughter Meg has a difficult relationship with her father because he spent her childhood more focused on work than on family. She is played by actress and Tony Award nominee Lily Rabe, known for her multiple roles in the FX anthology series American Horror Story. Recent credits include HBO's The Undoing, Prime Video's The Underground Railroad, Showtime's The First Lady, Max's Love & Death, Apple TV+'s Presumed Innocent and others.
Grace is one of Jimmy's patients who has struggled for years to leave her abusive husband Donnie (Tirkey Jones). Jimmy struggles mightily to get Grace to leave, but eventually Grace is trapped by the start of Season 2.
Heidi Gardner is an actress and comedian who has appeared on Saturday Night Live since season 43 in 2017. The Groundlings native has also appeared in films and shows including 2018's Life of the Party, 2022's Hustle, HBO's Veep, NBC's Superstore, and Netflix's Girls5Eva.
Brett Goldstein, co-creator of Shrinking, will step in front of the camera in Season 2 to play a recurring character who has a major impact on Jimmy and Alice's lives. The British actor, comedian, and screenwriter is best known for his portrayal of the unsociable soccer player Roy Kent in “Ted Lasso,” for which he won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Prior to “Ted Lasso,” he appeared in several British dramas. -based shows and films, and created AMC's sci-fi series “Soulmates”. He has also hosted the podcast Films To Be Buried With with Brett Goldstein since 2018.
