Haley Bieber's new Rode Barrier Butter is so seductive, you'll want to apply it everywhere.
Haley Bieber is the undisputed queen of foodie beauty trends, from glazed doughnut skin to blueberry and butter yellow nail polish. But her latest rodeo skincare launch may be her most delicious creation yet. Barrier Butter is a rich, but not greasy, moisture balm meant to seal in the rest of your evening skincare routine.
As we've seen Bieber hint at the final launch with pastel dresses and nails throughout the summer, we've seen her put on this moisturizing step at the end of her skin care routine. In past “Get Ready” videos and skincare videos, I've talked many times about how I like to use a rich balm to really lock things in,” Bieber reminds me in the Zoom interview.
In some circles, this Bieber-approved technique, known as “slugging,” involves applying a Vaseline-based ointment to the face before bedtime. But if the mere thought of applying Aquafol to your cheeks makes your burning skin prickle, Barrier Butter may be a safe product to try slugging with. The Barrier Butter, which can be added to your cart on October 28 in conjunction with a campaign featuring [90s supermodel Claudia Schiffer, draws its plumping power from a blend of hyaluronic acid, which hydrates above and below the skin's surface. It also contains a moisturizer known as polyglutamic acid that locks in moisture, a nourishing emollient called murumuru butter that reduces transepidermal water loss, and ceramide NP, a concentrated lipid that strengthens the skin barrier function.
In addition to being applied to the face, neck, and chest, it can also be used all over the body on hands, elbows, knees, and other dry areas. Available in a smaller travel size and a larger at-home tube, the balm marks Rohde's first foray into head-to-toe moisturizing, following in the footsteps of such Rohde-favorite items as Pineapple Refresh Cleanser and Glazing Milk Essence.
“It's really, really good going into these months of fall and winter, especially when the skin starts to dry out and crack in certain areas,” Bieber explains. She carries the mini version in her Goyard diaper bag when she is out and about to moisturize her hands, face, chest, and elbows. At home, she loves the full-size version. ''I wanted to have a versatile option,'' she says. 'So we have a larger version and a smaller version.'
Bieber always envisioned adding a product like Barrier Butter to Rohde's lineup, alongside fan favorites Lip Peptides and Pocket Blush. The product development team would hate for me to come in. Because I'm genuinely very meticulous and obsessed with every product. But there's a reason for that,” she says.
I jumped at the chance to try Barrier Butter, which is dermatologist-tested, non-comedogenic, and carries the seal of approval from the National Eczema Association, before talking to its mastermind. The morning after applying the Barrier Butter, despite the fact that my face was very dull, there were no new acne or dermatitis breakouts at all. I am currently taking a break from Botox and was curious about slugging as a first aid treatment to fill in the fine lines on my forehead. Unlike other slugging products on the market, the Barrier Balm soaked into my fussy skin without feeling the least bit nasty.
“When you have sensitive, potentially acne-prone skin, it's hard to find a really rich product that works for you,” agrees Bieber, who has been open about her perioral dermatitis struggles online. “So that's what I really wanted to try to address with this product, it allows it to be rich and it allows it to balm without feeling super greasy or super heavy on the skin.”
The barrier balm is not the only product Beaver is preparing to launch. Following the launch of her pocket blush in June, she has teased a few new additions to her regular makeup routine. Wouldn't it be fitting, I ask, if the slim brown tube that made a cameo on Lorde's Instagram last week turns out to be a lip liner or freckle pen?
While she admits that another color hybrid is finally coming, she tells me she can't share much else for now. As for the fans who are keeping track of all the containers she has: “I think all the little detectives are very clever”
.
But they are not always tracking. Followers interpreted Rohde's mini-barrier butter tip as a sign of the upcoming SPF.
“But SPF is something I'm really passionate about,” Rohde said. But SPF is something I'm really passionate about. For me, SPF is something that breaks me down more than any product I try.”
Bieber also plans to double down on the unexpected success of the Rohde lip case, which allows you to proudly carry a tube of Peptide Lip Treatment on the back of your phone. Over the summer, the brand released four limited-edition summer lip case colors that match the juicy shades of its seasonal lip tint lineup. And now, if teasers from the likes of influencer Matilda Djerf can be believed, some of the brand's core lip tint colors are now in coordinating espresso brown and ribbon pink phone cases.
“You never know what will grab people's attention, what will stick and what won't, what will resonate and what won't,” Bieber continues about the lip cases. But I'm always willing to take risks and try different things. And this was really the most wonderful surprise."

While we'll have to wait a bit longer to get our hands on Rohde's fall launch, Bieber didn't hesitate to drop a hint about the seasonal beauty trends she's trying. She's already swapped out her deep blackberry manicure for a “glaze-y latte color.” As for makeup, Bieber says “anything goes like cinnamon” for her.
“I see a lot of people talking about cinnamon makeup, and I love that vibe,” she says.
“I'm definitely going to be in on all the cinnamon vibes this fall.”
Before we hung up, Bieber told me that her “insane” cinnamon buns are a hit with her friends. “I have literally been the biggest gatekeeper of my recipe all of the time, but I think I'm getting to the point where I have to share.” If she doesn't, at least we'll have her secret to buttery, hydrated skin.
