Sabrina Carpenter playfully incorporates her sexuality into her lyrics, choreography, and onstage costumes.

The singer was recently interviewed by TIME and asked if she has escaped the “vilification” that artists like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera received in the 2000s for incorporating sexuality into their work.

“No, I definitely get that too,” Carpenter said.

She is frustrated by it, but has good strategies for dealing with criticism. [Whenever I feel like I'm the only one being criticized or upset about something that other people are free to do, someone has said to me: all I see is negative things about myself. My friends don't see that.”

Carpenter continued. 'Yet every once in a while you'll get a mother who has a strong opinion about how you should dress. To that, I just tell them that they don't have to come to the show. [because] honestly, the scariest thing in the world is having to get up on stage in front of a huge audience and perform as if nothing happened. If the one thing that helps you be able to do that is dress in a way that you feel comfortable, then you have to do that."
