Liz Hutton, who is battling terminal cancer, told BBC Radio 4's Today program that meeting Princess Kate and Prince William was “a huge shock.”
After being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer, 16-year-old Hutton made a bucket list of photo shoots and snapping members of the royal family was one of her items. After hearing Liz's story, the Prince and Princess of Wales asked her to come to the castle for Wednesday's ceremony.
“They had no semblance of dignity,” she told Today. 'There was only humanity and kindness.'
The royal couple posted two photos from their meeting on Instagram, with Princess Kate giving Liz a tight hug in one snapshot and the photographer, her stepfather, mother and brother posing with Kate and William in another.
The Welsh couple also said, “Congratulations to everyone honored in Windsor today! It was a pleasure to have @lizhatton_photography help me capture these special moments 📸🎖️.”
While she was able to take pictures while Prince William honored those doing good work in the UK, Hutton said she “never expected” to have a private meeting with the royal family.
“I did! And her brother interrupted her in an interview.
“Honestly, talking to them was amazing, like talking to anyone, like talking to a normal person,” Hutton mused.
The teenager, who was diagnosed with desmoplastic small round cell tumor and given six months to three years to live, is determined to make the most of the time she has been given.
“I am now essentially faced with the choice of continuing treatment or continuing to live. Given that treatment is unlikely to work, it's probably better to fill my life with as many good experiences as possible,” Hutton said.
Wednesday's visit with the inspirational teenager was the first time the Princess of Wales has been seen since she announced in early September that she had finished chemotherapy. Liz did not mention what they discussed during their time together, but the 16-year-old girl has two things in common with the Princess of Wales.
In addition to knowing what it is like to battle cancer, Princess Kate is also a photography fan, serving as a patron of the Royal Photographic Society and often taking family portraits over the years.
Hutton's mother, Vicki, spoke of what it meant to meet the royal couple. 'I would love to be with Liz forever and not have to go through this. But it's not going to happen and I'm so grateful that people are going out of their way for Liz and making her dreams come true."
The couple's mother, Vicki, said, ”We're so grateful to the people who are making this happen.Much has been written about the hobbies enjoyed by members of the Royal Family. For example, Tom Parker Bowles, son of Queen Camilla, said that his mo...
