Prince William enjoys a sporty dad's night out with Princess Charlotte's godfather

Prince William had quite a busy week, teaming up with David Beckham to celebrate a successful fundraising event on Tuesday, October 1, performing an ordination at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, and then helping a teenage cancer patient cross one off his bucket list. On October 2, however, Prince William took the opportunity to relax by attending a soccer game with one of his oldest friends.

Prince William, a longtime Aston Villa fan, and his close friend Thomas van Straubensee watched the team beat Bayern Munich at the Villa Park Stadium in Birmingham, England, and gave a rather enthusiastic thumbs He gave a thumbs up.

Van Straubensee is not only William's best friend, but also Princess Charlotte's godfather. They both attended Radgrove Prep School and have remained close friends over the years, and Thomas named William as godfather to his four-year-old daughter, Mary, as a way of returning the favor.

The two had a great time cheering on Aston Villa on Wednesday night, jumping up and down, clapping and exchanging hugs when their team won.

Thomas, a father of two, gave a speech at the 2011 wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, but has other connections to his friends' children. He married Lucy Lanigan-O'Keefe, a teacher at Thomas Battersea School, the alma mater of Prince George and Princess Charlotte, in 2020.

Van Straubensee's brother Charlie is also a royal godfather, serving in that role for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's son Prince Archie. Sadly, as the Duke of Sussex notes in his memoir Spare, Van Straubensee's third brother, Henry, another close friend of Harry's, died in a car accident in 2002.

Prior to the match, William, a Villa fan, was able to meet members of the 1982 European Cup winning team.

Prince William's boys' night out followed an emotional encounter with Liz Hutton, a 16-year-old girl battling a rare terminal cancer. Prince William met Hutton and her family, along with Princess Kate, who showed up for the first time since completing chemotherapy in September, and shared a photo of Kate hugging a photo fan on Instagram.

On Thursday, October 3, the Prince made another sporty outing, heading to the newly reopened community pool and highlighting his partnership with the Royal Foundation to increase the number of Britons who can take swimming lessons.
