Princess Kate's brother, James Middleton, opened up about his past mental health struggles and admitted that his former dog, Ella, saved his life.
In an excerpt from his new book, Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life, recently published in the Daily Mail, Middleton talks about a time in his life when he suffered from deep depression and at one point experienced suicidal thoughts. In what was undoubtedly one of his lowest moments, he says Ella was there to help him decide to hang in there and keep on living.
“I looked down at the ladder again. Ella was motionless. Her brown eyes stare at me with a soulful, pleading gaze. Kate Middleton's brother wrote 'If I die, what will become of Ella?
“I have loved her with every fiber of my being since she was a tiny, newborn, blind puppy. She was my companion, my hope, and my rock through my darkest days. She loved me unconditionally and faithfully,” H continues in the book. “When I couldn't sleep at night, she would be in bed beside me, helping me through the bleak pre-dawn hours. Even when I feel that life is not worth the effort, I take her for a walk and feed her. She gives me purpose, a reason for being. What would she do without me?”
Middleton went on to say that in that moment, thanks to her dog's boundless devotion, “reality entered the picture” and she decided not to end her life.
“I pulled myself back from the brink, slowly descending the ladder and patting Ella's silky head. 'She is the reason I do not make the fatal leap. She is Ella, the dog that saved my life.”
Middleton has been surprisingly candid about his past mental health issues, describing that period of his life as a time when he felt “misunderstood and a complete failure.”
“I wouldn't wish a sense of worthlessness, hopelessness, loneliness, or isolation on my worst enemy. I'm driving myself crazy,” he continued.
Middleton also praised his pup for saving his life, as well as his sister, Kate Middleton, and his brother-in-law, Prince William, for understanding what he was going through, which is a byproduct of their mental health advocacy, Middleton wrote.
“I am grateful to Princess Catherine and Prince William. Their work in the mental health field has provided me with invaluable knowledge and understanding,” Middleton writes.
“My parents rely on them and Pippa to break through the impenetrable barrier of my silence. Sometimes they break through. Sometimes my sisters gently cajole me out of the apartment."Middleton also noted that ”my sisters are always there to help me.While promoting his book, Middleton also reveals his long-term goal of making therapy dogs more accessible through actual prescriptions from health care providers.
“[My] ambition is to put dogs on doctors' prescriptions. Because I think there are so many undeniable things dogs can do for us,” the author told People in an exclusive interview. 'There is so much to learn from dogs. They don't think about yesterday. They don't get frustrated about yesterday or worry about the future. They live in the moment. If we focus a little more on that, I think they will be happier.”Much has been written about the hobbies enjoyed by members of the Royal Family.
