Courteney Cox Says “Monica is Alive and Well,” but a “Friends” Reboot is Out of the Question

It's hard to believe “Friends” was released 30 years ago. In honor of the sitcom's 30th anniversary, Courteney Cox looks back at the hit TV show that continues to find new fans even in 2024.

Cox spoke to People at a Rock4EB event on Saturday, September 21, and marveled at the success of Friends.

“It's insane to me because it feels like time goes by so fast and you don't realize it,” she said of the TV show's launch 30 years ago on September 22, 1994. “I used to say things like, 'Oh, I can't wait for this month, ' or 'Oh, it feels like forever.' I never say those lines anymore.”

Cox also spoke about how her beloved character, Monica Geller, is doing now. 'Monica is alive and well,' the actress told People. 'Are you kidding me?'

While “Friends” remains a cultural touchstone, Cox doesn't revisit old episodes that often. But when I come across an episode, I can't help but watch it,” she told the magazine.

Like viewers around the world, Cox is grateful that “Friends” continues to entertain new fans.

“That show is incredible,” she told the outlet. ''Every joke is alive, every character is so amazing, and it has some of the best writers in the world. We're lucky that it's been going on for generations. We're very lucky.

Sadly, however, the Cougar Town star is not convinced that a Friends reboot will work.

“It's hard to try to redo something,” she told People. Anything with a 're' in this group is ....... I think it's very special."

She added, ”I think it's a very special thing.

While a reboot is off the table, the cast reunited for Friends: 2021's Friends: The Reunion. Cox, Jennifer Aniston, and Lisa Kudrow even shared photos of their night together.

Unfortunately, the cast lost one of them in October 2023. Friends fans around the world mourned the loss of Matthew Perry, who played Cox's love interest Chandler Bing on the hit show.
