In his new memoir, Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life, James Middleton, brother of the Princess of Wales, shares candid details about his family life and how they helped him battle depression. He reveals a lot. But in a new interview with Hello! magazine, in a new interview with the royal siblings revealed that their younger sisters, Kate and Pippa Middleton, had an “easier” time with family therapy than their parents.
James, whose book was released on Thursday, September 26, told the media that the Middletons attended therapy sessions to better understand what he was going through.
“It gives someone the opportunity to ask questions that I don't necessarily know the answer to, or may be too emotional to give an answer to, or not confident to say it,” he shared, adding, “It's like having a translator.”
The founder of James & Ella Dog Food credits his late dog Ella with preventing a suicide attempt at the height of his depression. His parents initially struggled with blaming themselves for his symptoms, he told Hello!
“It was easy for my sisters,” he said. In the beginning, my parents saw it as their own issue,” James told Hello! James told the magazine.
He continued, “That's why it was so important to have someone else in the room to explain: No, this is not something your son did. This is a combination of multiple things. It goes back to his childhood, but there is no one trigger'.”
James credits sisters Kate and Pippa for bridging the gap between James and his parents.
“Once I started to understand it a little myself, then my sisters understood it and were able to talk about it with my parents as well ...... Now it's something we can discuss at the dinner table,” the entrepreneur shared.
In his book, James writes about how he was “privileged” and had a “loving and tight-knit family.” However, his depressive emotions did not initially allow James to turn to the princess or other family members.
“Calls went unanswered. Emails remained ignored. Invitations to visit remained ignored. I hide behind a double-locked door and cannot be reached,” he wrote, adding, ”My sisters sometimes gently coax me out of the apartment.”
However, James wrote that once he confided in her about his depression, the Prince and Princess of Wales, who had worked with mental health charities for years, brought “invaluable knowledge and understanding” about his depression.
James, who is married to Alizée Thevenet and has a baby boy, Inigo, with his wife in 2023, said that therapy allowed the Middletons to discuss mental health more freely.
“It helped us become more open as a family, not just me personally, but as a unit,” he said.
