In his new book, “Princess Catherine,” author Robert Jobson writes that Prince William used the pseudonym “Steve” to “avoid media attention and experience a certain normalcy while at school,” as reported by the Daily Mail.
According to Jobson, the “media” reportedly “made a deal” with royal officials to “give Prince William privacy” while he attended the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
Prince William, however, “consented” to several photographs and interactions, including one taken on his first day of school in September 2001.
“In an odd attempt to stay under the radar among friends, he decided to use the pseudonym ‘Steve,’” Jobson wrote.
In addition, Jobson writes that while in school, Prince William avoided people who “just wanted to know about his background.”
“People who try to take advantage of me, people who try to take advantage of me, I see right through them and I stay away from them right away,” Jobson claims Prince William said at one point. I'm not stupid.”
According to the author, “Steve” was not the only pseudonym the Prince used to conceal his identity as a student and avoid the intense media scrutiny that has historically befallen the monarchy.
“On weekends and holidays, he often took Lady Catherine out to Highgrove, Sandringham, or the cottage at Balmoral Manor,” Jobson wrote.
“Occasionally they checked into hotels using the names Mr. and Mrs. Smith. As the Daily Mail reported, the Prince and Princess of Wales also used the pseudonyms Martin and Rosemary Middleton when checking into hotels after rekindling their romance following a brief separation.
And in 2011, after they married, the royal aide and security team reportedly used the names “Danny Collins” and “Daphne Clarke” to refer to the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, with the initials “DC” used after their new royal title.
