Chapel Roan Dedicates Best Newcomer Award at the 2024 MTV VMAs to the “Queer and Trans People Behind Pop”
Chapel Lawn could not be more proud to represent the “Pink Pony Club.”
The pop star won the prestigious Best New Artist Award at the 2024 MTV VMAs on Wednesday, September 11, and had the opportunity to honor and uplift his LGBTQ+ fans in his acceptance speech.
An unabashed queer music maker, Roan thoughtfully shared what it means to her to make art like hers and have it resonate with so many people.
The 26-year-old hitmaker looked thrilled and overwhelmed as she took the stage in her armor-inspired gown (and her third medieval look of the evening). 'Can you believe it' We're at the VMAs,” she began.
The “Good Luke, Babe!” singer then read from a speech she had written in her “journal.” She said. I dedicate this to the queer and trans people who fuel pop, to the gays who dedicate my songs to someone they love or hate.”
“Thank you to my fans who listen when I share my joys and fears,” the singer (whose real name is Kaylee Rose Amstutz) continued.
She concluded her moving speech by addressing her Midwestern fans directly, mentioning her upbringing in Willard, Missouri, and her hit 2023 album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. She stated, ” For all the queer kids in the Midwest who are watching right now, I'm watching you, I understand you.
Lorne received her first VMA nomination at this year's ceremony. In addition to Best New Artist, he was nominated for MTV Push Performance of the Year for “Red Wine Supernova,” Best Trending Video for “HOT TO GO!” and Song of the Summer for “Good Luck, Babe!”
In the Best New Artist category, she faced stiff competition from Benson Boone, Gracie Abrams, Shaboozie, Teddy Swims, and Tyra.
The singer/songwriter's big VMA win came just under a year after the release of her debut album. The album was released on September 22, 2023, and since then its popularity has only grown, eventually reaching the top five of the Billboard 200 chart in June 2024.
