Let's try 90's style haircuts!

The 90s were a time of experimentation in hairstyles, and after the heavily teased hairstyles of the 80s, the next decade brought smarter, layered hairstyling options. Along with gorgeous, bouncy blowouts, choppy layers, bangs, and angled bangs, short bobs and pixies became popular.

If this decade is your favorite hairstyle, there is plenty of inspiration to show your stylist right away. We've found the best inspirational photos of the '90s core cuts with an easy modern twist (i.e., they look sophisticated, not dated). Below are some of the best '90s-style haircuts.

Lana Ogilvie, Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and the first model of color to sign with CoverGirl, had a great haircut in the 90s. This spikey, piecey pixie short is an effortlessly cool haircut (you can leave out the piece sticking straight up).

Leelee Sobieski was known for her long, shiny hair. Here, at the Hollywood premiere of Never Been Kissed, it is long and layered with a little curl at the ends. If you have similarly long hair (or are willing to try extensions), this is a great place to get inspiration for such a cut.

The 90s have been quite heavily influenced by the 70s, and this retro cut by Heather Graham is no exception. This retro cut by Heather Graham is no exception. The trick to this look is in the styling (mainly curling irons).

Of all the wild hairstyles Cyndi Lauper gave us in the 80s and 90s, this simple version is one of my favorites. It's a blunt bob with the ends curled down, but with funky, uneven bangs, it still retains Lauper's trademark style.

Neve Campbell, the scream queen of the 90s, made the short bob haircut her signature. It's a particularly sophisticated style (she attended the premiere of Wild Things, a darker role than the one she played in the first Scream film), with a few layers to keep the cut from becoming too flat.

Brandy's micro braids were legendary (she often wore braids as the main character in “Moesha,” as seen in this photo). This look obviously takes time and effort, but the dark colors contrasting with the caramel hues that highlight her face are gorgeous.

Nicole Kidman wore her naturally curly hair on the red carpet in the 90s. Like many curly hair cuts, this look benefited from strategic layering throughout to create volume and dimension while maintaining length.

Heather Locklear was the epitome of 90s blonde inspiration. This is a less voluminous version of her classic style, so it would work in a more contemporary context. Wispy bangs, long layers throughout, and lots of hair dye if the hair wasn't originally this color. (Highlights would be easier these days.)

Demi Moore's “soft pixie” was a great one - a popular cut for other stars like Winona Ryder and Halle Berry over the last decade. Here, Moore avoided countless layers and kept the hair close to the same length, but lengthened the bangs and tucked them behind the ears.

This mushroom-style pixie is not for everyone (although Christy Turlington, who modeled for Vogue magazine, certainly looks good). Ask your stylist if it suits your face shape and hair volume.

This chin-length, blunt bob, which also has a center part, is difficult to pull off. Naomi Campbell has a great hairstyle, of course, but it is worth noting that the cut is angled to follow her face shape perfectly. If you decide to go with this style, you may want to ask your stylist how often you need to come in for trims.

Julia Roberts' 90s career is best remembered for her classic curls, but I like this lob (long bob) just as much as her curly style. She offered us shorter cuts in the late 90s, framing the face in a wonderful way. She also shows that even people with full, thick hair can have short cuts.

Although her most iconic roles (“Ferris Bueller's Day Off,” “Dirty Dancing”) were in the 80s, Jennifer Grey's wispy curls remained appropriate for the next decade. This style is a softer, more “bouncy” version of some of her 80s cuts, and is easy to pull off on those with fine hair.

Madonna has never been afraid to change her look, and this chic version of platinum blonde hair is very easy to copy. The shoulder-length length and gentle waves soften the edginess of her dark roots.

Jennifer Connelly has been in show business for a long time, but it wasn't until the '90s that she entered her twenties (and began wearing a mature style). This cut is simple, but the ends are styled to give it shape and volume. Bonus: Those thick eyebrows. I'm jealous.

90s It Girl Gwyneth Paltrow went through a lot of hairstyles in the 90s, from short pixie to shoulder-length. This simple shoulder-length version is slightly layered in the front and cropped at the bottom. The center part shows the roots so it doesn't look boring.

In the 90s, some people loved the deep side part. This look is a dirtier blonde than the platinum version on this list, and the longer layers and side bangs framing the face make this look like an effortless cut, although it may depend on the hair type.

Reese Witherspoon has always been known for her trademark blonde hair, and this deep blonde version (with very subtle highlights) is what I always associate with her. For the past decade, it seems like every middle schooler has had this shoulder-length cut with messy ends and side bangs.

Elizabeth Berkley had gorgeous curly hair (just look at “Saved by the Bell”); in the 90s, Berkley dropped the volume of the 80s style a bit and graced us with a more understated version: short bangs, long lengths, and amazing texture graced us with.

We watched Drew Barrymore grow from the '80s into the '90s, and her long hair curls for the People magazine shoot are youthful, yet delightfully understated. Obviously, if your hair is wavy to medium curly, this style is easy to do.

Ask any stylist today to “be Rachel” and they will know what you are talking about. But it's such a distinctive cut that it's probably best left in the decade that made it famous. Instead, opt for something softer like this, with similar layers but longer lengths and waves.

Sure, Claudia Schiffer has great hair (she's been compared to Brigitte Bardot, which is one of her defining characteristics), but the bouncy waves of the 90s are still gorgeous and classic. For a more modern look, just lengthen the layers in the front.

This short bob by Sharon Stone is a softer version of the short bob we sometimes see on her, a very easy cut to maintain. The short layers are mainly towards the front of the face, but not so short that they can't be put behind the ears (or pushed back as gorgeously as this one).

Winona Ryder's pixie with extremely short bangs was an iconic hairstyle of the 90s. I, however, prefer this slightly longer version, with her hair brushed back and swept to the side. It accentuates the contours of her face, and is easier and softer than the more hyper style.

Angelina Jolie's 90s pixie hair was brushed (and probably secured with hairspray). So the styling kept her hair out of her face while still giving her an edgy level worthy of a star. It's a great classic cut.

Angela Bassett's twists are gorgeous. It's thicker and more massive than Brandi's micro braid (which makes sense since Bassett was playing an older, more mature role), and the angled effect at the bottom is equally cool.

Top model Amber Valletta shows off one of the most classic cuts from the 90s. This hairstyle has long been a favorite because it suits many hair types.

While it wasn't always curly hair in the 90s, Mariah Carey's naturally voluminous hair was iconic. To create volume with tight curls, lots of layers are a must. For a curly cut, nothing beats this style.

Elizabeth Hurley's classic 90s long cut adds chaos. Layers along the face and single length cuts throughout, but the bangs are choppy bangs that look as if they were cut by the artist herself (in a good way).

Proof that a cut with minimal layers is not boring: Robin Wright looks flawless in the April 1992 Vogue feature. Perhaps a texturizing spray (and Wright's natural volume) was used to make this 'do look tousled and three-dimensional.

Cindy Crawford's signature long, layered hair was an unforgettable part of the 90s. It has lots of layers from chin length. To curl this kind of healthy hair, you need volume or extensions, plus a curling iron.

This bombshell did it best. Most of Monica Bellucci's hair is very long like this, but the magic is in the bangs.
