Kaia Gerber shows off her timeless summer outfit formula in a dreamy LBD and ballet flats

This July, the morning after you wake up not knowing what to wear, take inspiration from Kaia Gerber's timeless summer outfit formula.

Kaia Gerber strolled around Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood on Friday, July 12 in a platonic ideal of a summer LBD and her all-time favorite ballet flats. Her black dress, a Quinn Midi by Dohen, featured dreamy cap sleeves, a small tie detail at the neckline, and a comfortably shirred bodice. The flat shoes, on the other hand, have a coordinating bow just below the toe box and a very slight heel. They are from the French brand Repetto, and Gerber has worn them many times as everyday wear.

The combination of black shoes and a black dress is not a very labor-intensive styling. But as Gerber demonstrates, this simple combination can work with just the right choice of details. Her dress is classic black, but the romantic puff sleeves and shirred bodice add visual interest. (A cotton T-shirt dress might not have achieved the same effect. ) But this precise duo is a French girl on her way to the pharmacy and an off-duty ballerina, worthy of hitting the "order" button online.

Of course, Kaia Gerber's summer attire doesn't end with LBDs and flat shoes. It's oversized sunglasses, wired headphones, and canvas tote bags. (The founder of the "Library Science" book club and a lover of styling books as accessories, her bag could have been purchased at a store like McNally Jackson. (which may or may not be the same).

Many fashion insiders would say that black ballet shoes like Gerber's are "classic" or "essential." Gerber proved it this week in a series of her street style sightings. Pairing them with sweatpants one day and a summer trend of white skirts the next, she proves the versatility of the Repetto ballet shoe.

When it comes to her dresses, Garber is one of the many celebrity fans of California-based brand Dôen. From Elle Fanning to Lily Aldridge to Jennifer Lopez, Dôen dresses are photographed as often as celebrities.

In an interview with Elle, Gerber recalled that she realized that onlookers tracked her everyday outfits, like her black dress and flat shoes today. I remember the first time I felt like, "Oh, people care what I'm wearing." Growing up, I never had that feeling," she says. But of course we're paying attention: her simple, effective way of dressing is too good to go unnoticed.
