Emily Rutkowski pulls out chunky (and controversial) platform flip flops this summer

Emily Ratakowski revealed that she wears open-toed flip-flops in New York City. The city's sidewalks are littered with trash, and one often encounters rats. Despite this, they are the epitome of "summer shoes. And the supermodel has embraced the comfort of those slip-ons with her latest street style, putting an end (at least for now) to the heated debate.

Rutkowski was spotted on her daily walk around Soho in the early morning hours of Thursday, June 27. Taking her usual route, the 33-year-old was photographed wearing a white linen button-down shirt. The sleeves were casually rolled up to her elbows and the top was completely unbuttoned, revealing the brown bralette she wore underneath and her toned abs.

She braved the early morning heat and opted for slouchy parachute pants. Not only has the Rutkowski worn them many times, but stars like Jennifer Lawrence have recently taken a liking to the style, wearing the baggy bottoms twice in the space of a few days this week alone.

Emrata's dark green bottoms had a low, elastic waistband and wide balloon legs that came to just below the ankles.

Ratajkowski's shoe of choice was a pair of black chunky flip-flops by Axel Arrigato, which tied together her effortless "on the go" street style. She wore her brunette hair down and completed her look with black oversized sunglasses and large gold hoop earrings.

Despite their universal and timeless nature, nothing is more controversial when it comes to summer dressing than the flip-flop silhouette. Although flip flops are known for their functionality and ease of wear for any occasion (including casual walks in Manhattan, as seen in the Emrata), every year, there is a flurry of heated opinions surrounding the shoes. (Nikki Ogunnaik, editor-in-chief of Marie Claire, disagrees with the flip-flop and considers close-toed sandals like the Fisherman style a summer necessity.)

However, Rutkowski has long been a darling of experimental fashion. The debate over rubber sandals will not stop her from comfortably running errands or providing her usual off-duty style anytime soon.

Down the road, buy a pair of similar black flip flops inspired by Emily Ratakowski.
