Blake Lively revived turn-of-the-century fashion with an outfit inspired by Britney Spears circa 2001.

On Friday, June 28, actress Blake Lively was spotted enjoying a night on the town with friends Isabella Ferrer and Hasan Minhaj. Enjoying New York's Greenwich Village, the Gossip Girl star glowed in a denim mini-dress featuring a scoop neck and fitted cut, Hello! reports.

The baby blue denim look was covered in light-reflecting rhinestone embellishments that highlighted the actress alongside friends Ferrer and Minhar.

In a Spears-inspired move that mimicked the pop star's iconic 2001 American Music Awards head-to-toe denim outfit, Lively paired a mini dress with an ankle-length blue denim trench coat. This oversized, mid-wash item was slightly darker than the denim mini-dress, providing the perfect contrast between the two denim fits.

To complete the nostalgic fit, Lively carried a Chanel crossbody bag with denim details and gold hardware.

The denim-on-denim trend was back in 2001 when Spears and her then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake wore matching denim outfits from head to toe while walking the red carpet at the American Music Awards Solidified.

In an earlier interview with Jezebel, costume designer Steven Gerstein gives behind-the-scenes insight into how the two (with some help) created the now infamous look.

"It was a no-brainer. Justin and Britney were dating at the time. We were in New Orleans when Britney and Justin said, 'Let's get matching denim. At the time, he said. We ended up remaking the Costume National suit that Justin wore on the "Celebrity" jacket into denim. Right around that time, we were in negotiations with Levi's, and Britney was working with Kurt and Bart. We had mutual contacts at Levi's, so it came together within days of the idea"

In 2015, Lively's husband, Ryan Reynolds, paid homage to the look (in his own way) via a tweet in which he photoshopped their faces into a photo of Spears and Timberlake walking the red carpet at the American Music Awards .

In 2014, singer Katy Perry and rapper Riff Raff walked the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards in matching double denim outfits, also inspired by Spears and Timberlake.

As The Cut reported at the time, Perry updated the look with studs and various shades, creating a patchwork denim look that was in vogue at the time.

"She looked like she was having more fun than anyone else on the red carpet," the outlet reported at the time. She wore denim, so how could she not?

In 2022, Perry revealed why she decided to walk the red carpet in a denim-on-denim look from 2001.

"I asked Riff Raff to come with me, and we both wore matching Versace pieces that paid homage to Justin and Britney," Perry explained during an appearance on Mo Hart's Amazon Music series, The Walk In." That was the moment that Britney gave us, and we wanted to pay our respects."
