On a summer Friday, I'm all about simple workwear recipes that I can assemble within five minutes: crisp layers, comfortable sandals, and I'm sure Katie Holmes will be back this week juxtaposing her affordable Madewell tote, chunky Fisherman sandals, oversized button-down shirts and designer dresses. I joined my wavelength full of 24 hours early on Thursday.

Holmes walked around New York City while chatting on the phone, balancing effortlessly with his high-low tightrope power. These are the times when, loyal fans know, Holmes usually cooks her best casual street style. She started with the base of the color block sundress by Ukrainian designer Bevza and delivered it again at 6/20. She added a blue and white striped shirt on top, unbuttoned to beat the week's heatwave, and played subtly in the palette of the dress's seaside tones.

Then came her accessories, starting with her Madewell bucket bag. A spacious leather tote for 2200 or less first appeared in her wardrobe last fall along with a pair of Adidas Sambas. It jumped off the shelves soon afterwards, partly because of its 5-star rating and partly because of the stamp of approval of Holmes. Meanwhile, she still unidentified woven leather sandals marked an entirely new wardrobe addition. So far, Holmes has been working on her A.P.C.Have spent spring and summer either reviving the wedge sandals trend in pairs from the collection or dressing up her Birkenstocks. For this reason, it was postponed for a cameo appearance in Holmes' closet.

At the same time that Holmes was wearing her work dress, she was also taking part in emerging celebrity street style moments. Oversize pajama-like tops are the trend for relaxed summer shirts, and from Selena Gomez (black trousers and Zara sandals heels) to Jennifer Lawrence (Mary Jane and a slip skirt), you can't stop wearing them this week. Even Jennifer Lopez is traveling alone in Italy wearing a matching set and a Dior basket bag, incorporating an oversized shirt into her Dolce Vita wardrobe.

Given that Katie Holmes often squeezes three chic costume changes into 24 hours, this may not be the last look she parades today But it's something I have in mind when I'm assembling my own summer Friday outfit tomorrow morning.
