Overalls are a one-time summer outfit that insiders can agree with all

Overalls have lived a lot of life in fashion. They were born in Levi's in the mid-1890s as protective gear for factory workers. In the decades that followed, overalls were accepted everywhere, from the skateboarding scene of the 1970s to the hip-hop style of the 1990s. Overalls still have some associations with light gardening or heavy duty farming gear; they were also concentrated with a windy, Nancy Myers-approved set dressing in the Coastal New England summer.

Now it is 2024, and overalls seem to have reached the simplest form: a one-time summer outfit that is not tied to a single aesthetic. They're not runway denim trends like super baggy jeans or denim-on-denim sets, but the kind of (again) underrated stalwarts that are appearing en masse in the wardrobes of celebrities and fashion editors.

The appeal is the same as before: A full coverage, functional jumpsuit that can be styled up and down to match the wearer's content. Katie Holmes and Olivia Wilde in a velvet Mary Jane and chore coat (for Holmes), white tank and peep sandals (for Wilde), and understated Sofia Richie Greinj looked stunning when she felt she was ready to make her maternity style debut. What did you wear?

If a-listers want to relax the era of the current style of overalls, fashion proper wants them to shine. At Fashion Week, I clocked Miu Miu's guests incorporating designer overalls, jeans jackets, crisp white shirts and boxy leather bags into double denim. I also like women around New York City, Copenhagen and Paris, but the effect of overalls to pair with glittering Alaïa flats and ruffled Peter Pan blouses overalls can still be carefree - but there's permission to take them on.

or on a kaleidoscope-like festival circuit. According to a recent Google survey, overalls were the most searched clothing in relation to Coachella outfits.

The tags are still from denim behemoths (like Levi's founding designer) and workwear labels, including Carhartt and Dickie. And hi gangsters as the purveyors of the next generation. The brand, a favorite of Nicki Ogunnaike, editor-in-chief of Marie Claire, made unisex overalls and chore jackets in bright colors.

On May 4, I visited Paris with Nike and had the opportunity to see kits for the 2024 Summer Olympics. In a showroom filled with small track briefs and basketball jerseys, I was surprised to see a version of Katie Holmes's costume from one of the mannequins staring at me.1 It turns out that Nike has decided to wear overalls to Team USA skateboarders for the 2nd Olympic Games of the sport. It's a nod to both the impact of skate culture on street style and purely functional choices. When you're wearing clothes to flip through the air, you want clothes that don't fall or fold upwards.

It is too early to call this latest overall sighting a sign of a trend within the trend. (If "Summer of Skater girls" doesn't really take off, I remember reading it here first. It's another case for the endless evolution of overalls. Through it all, they have made sure you overthink this summer no matter how much you are working or whether you are working at all
