Kaia Gerber makes polarized skirt pants trend look so wearable

Recently, Kaia Gerber has been all for a "double" styling moment. Last week, the model traveled for the anniversary weekend with two designer tote bags thrown over her arms. This week, Gerber has doubled not only in her accessories, but also in her choice of bottoms.

While in Los Angeles on Thursday at 5.30 AM, Gerber was caught in what might be a polarized trend for many: she got it back in the early 2000s by overlaying a micro mini skirt over flared pants.

Gerber was photographed leaving the casting session in a navy blue short-sleeved crop top, with a small tee showing off a sliver of her midriff. Her ab bare top wasn't the only focus of the outfit. Scanning the rest of her look, Gerber paired a casual shirt and light khaki Paloma Wool Archive trousers, with early straight leg pants hitting the right of the ankle and having wrap-around skirt details built into the waist.

Otherwise, Gerber wore simple black ballet shoes for the outing — a step back from her usual selection of sneakers — carrying her essentials in a white canvas tote bag over her shoulder. A bottle of water in her hand and a pair of black oval sunglasses tied together the entire "Model Slash Actress on the Go" outfit.

Gerber's recent sighting follows 1 week after she was seen leaving Manhattan by helicopter with friends over Memorial Day weekend. Her travel clothes included a blueberry button-down cardigan, black trousers and ballet shoes. Instead of a suitcase for her short weekend trip, she packed her belongings into a Paloma wool navy blue tote and a monogram Celine duffel bag.

Gerber is not alone in co-signing a layering of Y2K-inspired skirt-over pants. On May 2, YouTube・turned-style star Emma Chamberlain attended the runway show for the Coolage Fall 2024 ready-to-wear in an all-black outfit. For fashion Week, she chose a halter top with a bare navel paired with a mini skirt and wide-legged trousers.

Kendall Jenner is another celebrity who gives the polarizing costume official a stamp of her approval.1 While promoting 818 Tequila in Miami, Jenner wore a navy blue mini dress instead of a skirt and was caught on top of flared-out pants.

Celebrities aside, designers from Sandy Liang to Chopova Lowena and Collina Strada catapulted skirt-over-pants pairings back into the mainstream at Fashion Week when Gerber co-signed the look with yet another style star, before the split trend soared in popularity again. It is only a matter of time. In other words, fashion is always repeated.
