Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is back, angel wings and all

5 years after executives decided to end the Victoria's Secret fashion show, it is back to the runway format in the fall of 2024. The brand released a short teaser on Wednesday,5 May 15, on the back of her T・shirt where model Candice Swanpole texted in a "Vs Squad" group chat to spread the news "We're back.""

When the runway with the infamous angel wings arrives later this year, all eyes will be on the lingerie brand. Victoria's Secret closed its official show in 2019 after a number of controversies and outside criticism.Executives acted inappropriately, audience numbers and sales declined, and audiences were increasingly dissatisfied with the way a single body type was shown as an "angel" ideal on the runway.

This time, the brand says "read the comments and heard you" — meaning that the program corrects past mistakes and sets a fresh (but still glittering) precedent. "I hope they understood it correctly," one commenter wrote in the announcement post.

Ahead, we'll break down everything we know about the return of Victoria's secret fashion show and revisit why it was discontinued in the first place.

Victoria's Secret hosted annual fashion shows from 1995 to 2018. Each show featured models walking through the brand's lingerie, including sets decorated with over-the-top decorations like Swarovski crystals and wings like heavy sculptures to match each set. At its peak, it was seen by millions of viewers in prime-time TV slots.

The last show aired in 2018/12. Gigi Hadid, Jasmine Tookes and Elsa Hosk were among the runway cast.

Several circumstances combined and Victoria's Secret canceled its annual fashion show in 2019. The show's ratings had fallen sharply in the mid-2000s, along with sales of bras and underwear. Victoria's Secret had exclusively cast thin and tall models for the show, but the conversation about size and body inclusivity also gained traction, so industry insiders and viewers wondered why Victoria's Secret wouldn't cast models that reflected its customer base. Critics said the show objectified women rather than empowering them.

When Ed Razek, the brand's former head of marketing, commented on a trans model that angered readers in an interview with Vogue in 2018, the ex-executive also previously spoke derogatory about the plus-size model. He will retire in 2019. Former Chief Executive Les Wexner also left the brand in 2021.

This all happened against the backdrop of the #MeToo movement and the rise of competitors (ThirdLove, Aerie, Parade, etc.) who took a more inclusive approach to lingerie marketing. Victoria's Secret has since expanded its catalog and in-store list of models and launched brand rebranding initiatives, including the launch of VS Collective, a group of spokespersons aimed at conveying a refreshed image of the brand. Footballer Megan Rapinoe, tennis star Naomi Osaka and actress Priyanka Chopra were named first class.

Victoria's Secret tried to address critics last fall in the documentary "World Tour," which was released on Amazon Prime at the start of New York Fashion Week in 2023. The brand partnered with independent designers, creatives and filmmakers to create an artistic capsule based on their home city, modeled on the camera by Hailey Bieber, Paloma Elsesser and Laila Moss. Some viewers compared it to Rihanna's Savage x Fenty fashion show, which is also produced as a video for streaming.

Details of the show are scarce for now, but the teaser, through a more comprehensive lens, Bomb Energy in the late 90s and early 2000s High Grams

Past members of the so・called VS team ranged from Gisele Bundchen and Naomi Campbell to sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid. In recent years, Victoria's Secret has signed contracts with Paloma Elsesser, Hailey Bieber and Precious Lee, and last fall they revamped their in・house advertising campaigns and "tour" formats. The full cast list will be announced closer to the day of the show.

On Timing: Victoria's secret comeback efforts have gained some traction in recent months. Gen Z stars such as Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo and Renée Rapp wear custom and archive VS works for major performances. On the business side, the brand also reports better-than-expected sales for the start of 2024.
