Fresh off showing the world her French manicure remake at the 2024 Met Gala, Gigi Hadid is back on the casual outfit beat with a new styling lesson. This time, it's how to wear a dress over jeans in 2024.

Dresses over jeans, or pants of any shape, have always been a quasi-controversial look reminiscent of the early 2000s. But on Wednesday, May 8, in New York, Hadid (perhaps with the help of stylist Mimi Cattrell) made this extreme layering look more approachable. On the bottom, she wore loose-fitting denim, similar to the jeans she has been wearing on her recent walks around Manhattan. On top, a guest-in-residence polo sweater dress. Interestingly, in the middle, she unbuttoned half of her floor-sweeping cardigan.

She wore a silver necklace, square sunglasses, charmed heels, and a Miu Miu Arcadi bag.

Whether she's walking from her apartment to the brand's headquarters or out on a date with boyfriend Bradley Cooper, Hadid often picks out an outfit from the shelves of her knitwear brand, Guest in Residence. (On any other day, this outfit would have been put together with a classic crew neck or polo sweater. ) This model is made more interesting by layering the sweater dress over jeans and then unbuttoning it to function as a spring jacket.

It would take a lot more street-style sightings for Hadid's throwback getup to become a full-fledged trend. But celebrities' wardrobes have legs to wear dresses over pants: earlier this year, Kendall Jenner also wore a dress over coordinated pants. On the runways of New York and Copenhagen Fashion Weeks, brands from FFORME to Ganni have dressed their models in matching dress and pant sets. At the very least, Hadid's getup shows that this unlikely combination deserves to be revisited (and perhaps even tried on).
