Read MoreAnne Hathaway is arguably one of the most underrated trendsetters among A-list style stars, sporting looks as iconic as Valentino's PP Pink. In recent months, however, she has been changing her style narrative by embracing the spirit of Andy Sachs, the famous character from the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada.
Over the weekend, she donned the skinny pants popularized by the Y2K time machine for a special screening and conversation to celebrate her upcoming project, The Idea of You.
Hathaway attended a private event at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan on Sunday, April 28, wearing a three-piece leather set from the Ralph Lauren archives. Styled by Erin Walsh, the outfit featured a tight button-up leather vest, which was worn over a white collared shirt with a black tie. A fitted leather blazer was then layered over it, and instead of a miniskirt or wide pants, the 41-year-old opted for skinny pants, which had both pros and cons. The leather bottoms were tight throughout and nipped in slightly at the ankles.
Hathaway completed her look with black oversized sunglasses and Jimmy Choo pointed black pumps with three-dimensional floral appliqués.
The actress let her brunette hair down and opted for a glossy nude lip and dewy makeup.
Hathaway not only wore a polarizing silhouette, she wore it in leather form. But the actress was not the only celebrity to embrace this beloved early-aughts style.
In February, Meghan Markle went out to dinner in Los Angeles and opted for a pair of gray skinny jeans. She styled them with a gray knit sweater and ballet flats, the ultimate Y2K pairing.
Whether it's jeans or leather pants, fashion still leans heavily toward the loose and baggy. From Jennifer Lawrence and Katie Holmes to Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber, celebrities on both ends of the sartorial spectrum all favor comfortable bottoms.
Perhaps Hathaway's choice of skinny leather pants is a one-time clothing decision, but true fashion fans know that celebrity style is like a domino effect. With Hathaway's unapologetic embrace of all things tight and skinny, we may see a skinny pants revival in the near future.
