Jennifer Lawrence can't stop, won't stop the mesh flat shoe trend

Depending on who you ask, the mesh flat shoe trend is either a genius way to show off a pedicure or a toe-tapping look that should be avoided at all costs. If I had the opportunity to vote for Jennifer Lawrence, she would be in the first group with the other fashion editors and myself.

On the first real spring day in New York City - Thursday, May 2, when temperatures soared to nearly 80 degrees - Lawrence pulled out her favorite Alaia mesh ballet flats and paired them with another rich mom outfit. And by "favorite," we're not exaggerating: she's worn this pair multiple times this year and in 2023.

The rest of Lawrence's outfit dabbled in 2024 color trends and up-and-coming It bags, with a few wardrobe staples thrown in for good measure. (Did the actress' stylist, Jamie Mizrahi, give her an effortless high-low dressing class? If so, where can I sign up?) On top, a butter yellow Jil Sander jacket is casually layered over a plain white T-shirt. Underneath are puddle jeans secured with a Celine belt. A Bottega Veneta bag is draped over one arm to tie the whole look together.

Brands at all price points have introduced versions of mesh ballet flats over the past two years, but Lawrence's pair is the origin of the trend. Alaia's fishnet Mary Janes took street style by storm shortly after they were first introduced in 2021. Two years later, Lyst ranked the shoe in its hottest products index for 2023. The Wall Street Journal featured how difficult it was to find Alaia flats in stock just a few weeks ago. Lawrence, who has been wearing the shoes since the beginning, was clearly on to something. Another brand favored by the actress, The Row, also makes black mesh flat shoes that fashion editors love.

Lawrence's mesh flat style makes this trend very appealing: mesh flats are look-at-me shoes, but they are downplayed when worn with her casual jacket, jeans, and skirt. This won't be the last time she wears these shoes. The next time I see her, I'll probably be wearing my own shoes. Her penchant for toe-tapping style is that compelling.
