Read MoreZendaya arrived at the Challengers Los Angeles premiere ready to flip the script on "Method Dressing." Just as fans were getting used to the parade of net skirts and tennis racket embellishments, she swerved (and served) in a new direction with lingerie-like details.
The 27-year-old star appeared at a preview on Tuesday, April 16, wearing a gown with no obvious allusions to the film's tennis plot. Dressed as usual by stylist Lo Roach, Zendaya's Vera Wong gown was instead paired with a sheer lace corset bodice and a voluminous pink and black skirt.
Coat green, country club pleats, and preppy hair bows were nowhere to be found. This time around, Zendaya was dressed in a dramatic gown that said she was the true star of the film. Her dress represented many firsts for Zendaya's Challengers look. It was the first time she'd worn an exaggerated ballgown silhouette, the first time she'd color-coordinated a movie poster in shades of pink and black, and the first time she'd incorporated lingerie-inspired risqué detailing. (Roach has yet to elaborate on the inspiration for this look.)
Getting down to the details: the lace bodice was juxtaposed with a ballet-like pink skirt that extended into an exaggerated train, with another layer of black fabric underneath. The back of the dress was also decorated with peek-a-boo black lace, which contrasted with the bubblegum skirt.
Once again, Zendaya accessorized with Bulgari diamonds. Although her feet were hidden, it is safe to assume that she wore her trusty Louboutin pumps.
Zendaya worked with her longtime glam team, makeup artist Ernesto Casillas and hairstylist Ursula Steven, to create a beauty bout that complemented her statement gown. The look consisted of an airy ballerina bun secured at the top of her head, pale pink blush, and a natural yet glossy lip.
The evening wasn't all about raising the ranks with an array of tennis-inspired pieces. At the late-night after-party, Zendaya changed into a bright green halter dress by Celia Crisaglioti.
The Challengers Los Angeles premiere was only the latest stop on Zendaya's whirlwind fashion world tour this spring, but her main premiere look broke every pattern she had established at previous stops.
For each preview, she and Lo Roach had found an ingenious way to reinvent the tournament dress code. That method was a mix of custom-made designer items and valuable archival material, all with the energy of a Grand Slam champion.
This "method dressing" marathon began last month in Sydney, Australia, where Zendaya attended the Challengers' first premiere in a custom Loewe dress. Designed by Jonathan Anderson (the Challengers' costume designer and Loewe's creative director), the look made Zendaya's gown look like a glittering green tennis court. On it was a striking trompe l'oeil of the players' shadows, which served as decoration for the balls on her bodice.
Fashion commentators thought this set the stage for a touring wardrobe painted with a chartreuse palette of tennis balls. However, Zendaya wore little green at the official premiere and instead wore tennis whites continuously. At the London premiere, her Thom Browne dress was embellished with tennis rackets, in Paris she floated down the carpet in a gorgeous white gown by Louis Vuitton, and in Rome she went minimal in a Calvin Klein skirt suit.
The more casual photocalls were also a chance for Roach and Zendaya to flex their procurement muscles and play with casual silhouettes: in Milan on April 14, Zendaya wore a Ralph Lauren tennis dress that Cindy Crawford debuted on the runway in 1991. A week earlier in Rome, she returned to Loewe in a sparkly pleated mini dress paired with surreal tennis ball high heels. Vintage Vivienne Westwoods, Louis Vuitton, toweling 16Arlington, and even a bedazzled Lacoste set are incorporated into her look inspired by her on-screen tennis persona, Tashi Duncan.
The premiere of Challengers Los Angeles is one of the last tennis fashion aces on Zendaya's promo tour. She makes her starring debut a week later on Friday, April 26, in theaters across the United States.
Fans won't know exactly what to expect until they see Luca Guadagnino's film. (Early reviews suggest that the film is high-energy and slightly spicy, as befits a lingerie-inspired dress.) Stylistically, it is hard to imagine the on-screen costumes competing with Zendaya's touring outfits.
