Zendaya's "Challengers" after-party dress is tennis ball couture

Just when fans thought Zendaya had moved on from "method dressing" on the Challengers red carpet in Los Angeles, she ended the evening at the film's after-party with a mastery of on-court fashion.

Zendaya changed from an elaborate lingerie-inspired gown (more on that later) to a neon green dress for the after-party at Funke restaurant in Beverly Hills. The look was custom-made by Greek designer Celia Chrysalioti, who owns the oldest couturier in Greece, founded in 1906. The Athens-based designer has dressed several A-listers over the years, including her latest client, Coco Jones, at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Styled by Lo Roach, Zendaya's ensemble featured a halter design, a deeply plunging neckline, and a tennis ball embellishment at the front. In addition, the skirt was floor-length and parted at the center to thigh-high. She completed the look with white pointed toe pumps and Bulgari diamond earrings.

For the late-night celebration, the 27-year-old kept the same glamour as her evening look. Along with makeup artist Ernesto Casillas and hairstylist Ursula Steven, she wore a messy high bun and sparkling pink beats.

Zendaya's outfit change followed an unexpected appearance on the red carpet a few hours earlier. She surprised fans at the screening with an outfit unrelated to tennis, instead wearing an elaborate, custom-made Vera Wong gown. It featured a sheer lace bustier and a voluminous pink and black skirt.

The Challengers' Los Angeles premiere and subsequent after-party were the latest pit stop on the film's worldwide press tour. Zendaya and Roach have mostly stuck to "method dressing" while promoting the upcoming film. The two have referenced nearly every part of tennis, from courtside fashions to the tennis balls themselves.

The Los Angeles premiere is not the first time Zendaya has referenced the tennis ball silhouette. In Rome, she wore a glittery, pleated Loewe mini-dress and white pumps with Loewe studded tennis balls on the heels.

She also wore a custom Loewe look designed by Jonathan Anderson to the Challengers premiere in Sydney, Australia, on March 26. She wore a sequined green ensemble with a trompe l'oeil silhouette of a player's shadow on the bodice, the illustration of which appeared to be serving a ball.

Zendaya will make her debut Friday, April 26 as Tashi Duncan in Luca Guadagnino's film. The Challengers' promo tour may be coming to an end, but audiences can expect Zendaya and Roach to close out the circuit with the ultimate serve.
