Meghan Markle's white halter dress is a sign of her new style era

In March of this year, Meghan Markle reportedly hired stylist Jamie Mizrahi to "re-launch Hollywood." Less than a month later, the Duchess of Sussex is ready to reveal her new outlook on personal style. Spoiler alert: It's a bolder approach to the sophisticated neutral colors and streamlined dresses she's worn in the past.

On Friday, April 12, Meghan Markle wore an ivory dress by Heidi Merrick to cheer on Prince Harry at the Royal Salute Polo Challenge for Sentebale. (Former royal Heidi Merrick, along with Prince Siso of Lesotho, founded a charity in 2006 to help African children suffering from inequality, poverty, and HIV/AIDS.) Markle's high neckline and clean color palette mirrored her past public appearances, with the exception of the large triangular cutout at the base of her bodice.

Markle's dress also had a banded, structured waistband that flowed into a mid-length skirt. It was paired with oversized square black sunglasses, a second item from "California lifestyle brand" Heidi Merrick.

The flash of skin was a style 180 of Markle's understated yet sleek wardrobe, but her mix of accessories stayed true to past looks. She paired old staples (such as a Valentino white bag and Aquazzura nude pumps) with vintage pieces (archival Chanel earrings).

For years, Meghan Markle has supported Prince Harry's polo competition with spring-perfect sundresses and suits by luxury and contemporary brands, but never in the form of cut-out dresses; in 2018, she chose her favorite designer and attended the same Sentebale benefit in a Carolina Herrera denim dress. She also wore Aquazzura pumps for the occasion.

Between the March news that Markle is expanding her style range and her attendance at Friday's Polo Cup, the entrepreneur has made several surprise appearances. Those looks shared the same understated, sophisticated approach to her life as active royalty, and to dressing for her return to the U.S., with the same stable of designers her followers know and love. During a visit to the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles in March, Markle Oscar de la Renta shirtdress with semi-sheer floral detailing. A few weeks earlier, at the Kinsey Collection, she wore a Carolina Herrera floral cape over her shoulders. (Markle has worn ivory a lot in the past, but a bolder silhouette could be a new start for Mizrahi. From quiet luxury by The Row and Dior for Jennifer Lawrence to high glamour by Givenchy and Schiaparelli for Adele.

At the very least, the Duchess' look is subtly tied to one of her upcoming projects. Heidi Merrick is a Los Angeles-based designer who brings an upscale yet relaxed lifestyle to her clothes, reflecting her upbringing in Santa Barbara, California. The vibe is not too far removed from Markle's Montecito-based American Riviera Orchards (based on a limited sneak peek).

Markle and Mizrahi's vision will need more public appearances to fully take shape. So far, the results have been delightfully unexpected. Meghan Markle's cutout halter moment-inspired little white dress from below.
