Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are this awards season's hottest director couple

As The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab) perfectly put it, directors Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are the first couple in film today. Gerwig, who directed the award-winning "Lady Bird" (2018) and the beloved adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women" (2019), has been dating Baumbach since 2011 and shares a 9-month-old child with him named Harold; Kicking and Screaming (1995) and Mistress America (2015), Baumbach is most recently known for the much-discussed Netflix film Marriage Story, starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. That means the couple will essentially be competing against each other in the 2020 Golden Globes (open in new tab) and other awards seasons.

Gerwig and Baumbach are not nominated in the Best Director category for the 2020 Golden Globes, but their film has multiple nominations tonight. Gerwig's Little Women is nominated in two categories: for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama for Saoirse Ronan's portrayal of Jo March and Best Original Song.

Meanwhile, "A Marriage Story" is nominated in a total of six categories (open in new tab). Scarlett Johansson is competing with Ronan for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama. Adam Driver is also nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama and Laura Dern is nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama. The film is also nominated for Best Original Composition, Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture, and Best Motion Picture.

Inevitably, the couple will feel the pressure this awards season (both films are expected to receive Oscar nominations).

"It's exciting to have each other recognize the work that he and I have put into [our films]," Gerwig told The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab). 'There's a mutual desire to show off. At least on my end. I remember when I showed Noah the cuts and drafts of Little Women. He is my favorite filmmaker and my favorite writer. It means everything to me that he thinks it's good." [Baumbach continues. 'When we're working on our own projects, we're always talking about it, showing each other different things. I always feel very much a part of what she did. [Little Women] is absolutely her work, but it's not like I woke up one day and this movie was released. She has been talking about this film for several years. It's like, 'How wonderful that this is being appreciated the way you wanted it to be.'"

Gerwig and Baumbach met on the set of Baumbach's comedy-drama "Greenberg" in 2009, but their relationship did not officially begin until a year before Baumbach began divorce proceedings from his ex-wife Jennifer Jason Leigh (you may recognize her from Netflix's "Atypical ) in 2011, a year before he began divorce proceedings. Baumbach and Lee's divorce saga is rumored to be the inspiration for "A Marriage Story" (opens in new tab), although Baumbach insists that the film is not autobiographical in nature.

In a field dominated by male directors, it is exciting to see both of them, especially Gerwig, nominated at the same time. Best wishes to both directors!
