President Trump on Harry and Meghan: "I Don't Think This Should Happen

This week, President Trump gave a wide-ranging interview with conservative political commentator Laura Ingraham in which he discussed the ongoing situation in Iran and the impending impeachment trial. He also discussed Harry and Meghan's recent decision to step down from senior positions within the royal family (opens in new tab) and expressed sympathy for Queen Elizabeth.

"I think it's sad. Yes, I think it is. I think it's sad. She is a great woman. She has never made a mistake, I mean, she's had a perfect time. But I have a lot of respect for the queen. I don't think something like this should ever happen to her."

It's no secret that Trump likes the 93-year-old British monarch, but the US president also has a long history of controversy with the British royal family (open in new tab), particularly the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Notably, long before she married Prince Harry (and in keeping with the royal family's demand for political neutrality), Princess Meghan called Trump "misogynistic" and said she would consider staying in Canada if he won the 2016 election. (A statement from the Sussexes released earlier this week explained that they plan to travel between the United Kingdom and North America.) At this time, it is unconfirmed whether that means Canada, the U.S., or a combination of both countries.)

During his 2019 state visit to the United Kingdom, Trump also referred to the Duchess of Sussex as "nasty" in an interview with the British publication The (opens in new tab)Sun (opens in new tab).
