Rebecca English, longtime royal reporter for the Daily Mail, has written a sweet, honest and thoughtful article about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's decision to resign from the senior royal family. The whole thing is worth a read, but the most compelling part of the story gives us a better understanding of Harry and the kind of person he was before he met Meghan. Truth be told, he never felt at home in the Royal Family.

English explained that Harry always had a keen interest in what the media was saying about him. 'I became aware that someone was looking over my shoulder. I always wanted to know what people were saying about me." [Later in the article, she recalls another anecdote: 'If they're saying that about me, I'd like to know,' he says, pretending to hold a notebook and pen. 'Someday I'd love to have my own newspaper column. Then I could write the truth and tell people what I think. It's an interesting point, given Harry and Meghan's new and very specific media plan (open in new tab) to tell their story. And it does not include the small group of British royal reporters known as the Rota.

English explained that while pundits say the easygoing Harry will be missed, "don't be fooled for a second that he enjoyed it or even wanted to be there." Naturally, his well-heeled media advisors thought this was all part of his 'training' as senior royalty, but it was clear to all involved that it was an uphill battle."

Interestingly, "Until he settled down with Meghan, his greatest wish was to go and live in Africa. I want to work as a tour guide. (Given Harry and Meghan's move to Canada, this decision is also traceable.)

English noted: "To hear a young man who has been given all the privileges of life, who does not feel the pressure of working for a living as we do, speak this way about his situation It is also very frustrating to hear them talk this way about their situation. I can understand that.

English remembers the prince fondly, and also recounts how, while her son was in the hospital, he called her personally to praise her professionalism and to say he was thinking of her. 'Four months later, he met his future wife. In fact, we have barely exchanged a word since then. ...... Is there a connection between these two events? Amazing.
