Jorja Smith reveals her beauty routine
R&B songstress Jorja Smith's latest album, Lost & Found, will definitely get you hooked. It's an atmosphere you can't put your finger on. Part of its mystique lies in her slushy voice and intimate lyrics. But I am drawn to her ever-glowing complexion. So did Dior: in 2019, the British artist (who, at just 22 years old, has already collaborated with Drake and Kali Uchis) was named the brand's global makeup ambassador.
In Paris I interviewed Smith and here's what she had to say about fragrances, face masks, diversity in the beauty industry, and more.
"In fragrance, I like sexy scents. For night, I like oud and dark, woody, sexy scents. I also have daytime perfumes. I love Dior's Hypnotic Puison (opens in new tab) ($62). It's sweet, vanilla-y, and very soft."
"I used to go into my mother's room and secretly wear her scent. When I was younger, I'd also put on some of those cheap Charlie sprays they sell at Boots (opens in new tab) in the drugstore. That was definitely not the kind of perfume I wear now."
"I feel most beautiful when I am confident in myself. I go to the gym, run, and spend time with myself because it always makes me feel better. Seeing my friends always makes me feel good. Beauty comes from the inside, so you have to feel good from the inside first."

"I like hot yoga because I love the steam. Because the steam gives my skin a very nice glow. I also like face masks, especially when I fly because my skin gets really dry. I stick to clay masks and moisturizing masks."
"When I'm performing, I like a bold lip. If I'm not wearing anything on my face, I'll put something on my lips. My favorite nude is pinky brown. Dior Addict Lip Glow (open in new tab) ($34) makes my perfect nude. It's similar to my lip color but has a nice shine to it. It looks different on everyone and complements my natural lip color. I also love the Dior Backstage Face Palette (open in new tab) ($45) and the Dior Forever Foundation (open in new tab) ($52). The foundation is a bit matte, which I like to look glossy, but if I want to tone down the shine, I use this.
"I'll wear bare face and just wear lipstick. If I don't have to go somewhere or have my picture taken, I don't mess with my face, I let my skin breathe."
"My mom has really nice skin, so it's partly genetic. But I exfoliate every day, drink lots of water, and work out so my skin glows naturally. I also use natural skin care products and try not to change my skin care routine too often. For skincare, I use the Elemis superfood line.
"We need more diversity on the runway and in magazines. Wait, "normal people" is a misnomer. There are all different types of people. If you open a magazine, you should be able to see people who look like you. Everyone should embrace being themselves. When I moved to London and met women from all walks of life, I learned that I could never be anything but me. Accept yourself."
"Don't spend too much time looking at other people on social media. It's not real anyway. You have to find a way to be happy with yourself. Easier said than done, but the most important thing is to find happiness within yourself and realize that everything is really okay."
