Fact: There are few situations that are not made better by sitting on the couch, glass of wine in hand, and watching a romantic comedy. You may be hopelessly in love, heartbroken, or delighted. Romantic comedies will either commiserate with you or bless (open in new tab) you. (This is the "rom" part.) When you are sad or excited about life in general... Romacomé will cheer you up or put you back in a good mood. (This is the "com" part.)

Basically, Romacomé is a panacea. Needless to say, watching beautiful people stumble in love (opens in new tab) is objectively enjoyable no matter what mood you're in. It's obvious why Valentine's Day is a popular release date for romantic comedies, but there are already a fair share of charming and hilarious (opens in new tab) films coming out in 2020. The latest film adaptation of Jane Austen's classic "Emma," the long-awaited sequel to Netflix's "To All the Boys I Loved Before" (opens in new tab), the indie "Downhill," starring Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a couple in distress (open in a new tab), among others.

But that's not all: 2020 will also see the third Legally Blonde film, a showdown between J.Lo and Owen Wilson reminiscent of the golden age of romantic comedies (early 2000s), and Issa Rae, who plays a couple whose relationship is tested when they are on the scene of a murder and The year promises to finally be blessed with an action-comedy romance (opens in new tab) starring Kumail Nanjiani. No one knows rom-coms better than Jane Austen, but "Emma" is her best work, perhaps. To refresh your memory: the "handsome, smart, and rich" Emma Woodhouse has a talent for matchmaking and is adept at manipulating the people around her. But somehow she is oblivious to the wonderful romance that has developed between her and George Knightley.TL;DR: "Emma" is the novel that inspired "Clueless". Enough said.

Starring Julia Lewis-Dreyfus, Will Ferrell

A movie about a couple trying to find their way back to each other after discovering that they instinctively refuse to help each other during a disaster sounds like a very sad drama plot . And while "Downhill" has that sad situation at its core, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (open in new tab) and Will Ferrell at least get through the pain with a laugh.

Netflix's 2019 adaptation of the YA novel To All the Boys I Loved While nothing has come close to matching the absolute phenomenon that was Before, a sequel is pretty close. This time around, Lara Jean finds herself wondering if she should give another recipient of her iconic love letter a try, despite finally becoming a definite couple with Peter Kavinsky. Plus: John Corbett is back as Lara Jean's doting father, this time with a love story of his own.

Starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani: Issa Rae, Kumail Nanjiani, Paul Sparks, Anna Camp, Kyle Bornheimer

"The Lovebirds" is a film by Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani as a couple caught up in a murder mystery, so it will be a near "com" of a rom-com. (The trailer alone is full of hilarious scenes from start to finish.) But since the plot also includes a couple trying to figure out their relationship, I'll go ahead and label it a rom-com.

Claire Duval, a.k. a. In the film, directed and co-written by Marjorie (Veep), Kristen Stewart plays a woman who plans to propose to her boyfriend (Mackenzie Davis) in front of her parents before they realize their daughter does not yet know she is gay. Starring Jennifer Lopez and Owen Beevy Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, Sarah Silverman, John Bradley, and Michelle Buteau

J.Lo's (really fun) 2018 "Second Act" The world rejoiced when he returned to rom-com territory in Lopez plays a pop star who learns of her fiancé's affair just before their Madison Square Garden wedding. Described as "Notting Hill Meets the Proposal," the banger soundtrack is the secret to the success of J.Lo and Maluma's romantic comedy.

Starring Tracee Ellis Ross, Dakota Johnson, Kelvin Harrison Jr, Zoe Chao, Ice Cube, June Diane Raphael

Tracee Ellis Ross is a glamorous aging pop star, Dakota Johnson is a personal assistant with big dreams; the two team up to produce a new album, which of course caters to both women's creative desires and helps them find love in the process. It's like a romantic comedy Mad Libs sent from the skies above, and I'll be first in line at the theater.

Starring Reese Witherspoon Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Coolidge

Nearly 20 full years after Elle Woods first told the world that it wasn't hard to get into Harvard Law School and we finally have an update on how that illustrious law degree is helping America's favorite Gemini vegetarian. Almost everything about the third film in the series is being kept under wraps, including which stars from the first two films will return and plot details. However, my guess is that Elle will be the Tracy Flick within (too meta.)
