Super pink moon visible tonight

If March's Super Worm Moon (opens in new tab) was impressive, wait until you see April's Super Pink Moon (the largest and brightest lunar supermoon of the year). Here's everything you need to know about the first full moon of spring (opens in new tab).

Sadly, the moon's name has nothing to do with its actual color; according to the Farmer's Almanac (opens in new tab), the full moon is called the pink moon because it corresponds to the early spring bloom of the phlox subulata, a wildflower native to eastern North America.

April's super pink moon is considered a supermoon because of its proximity to Earth. When the moon reaches perigee (the closest point to the earth), it appears larger and brighter than a normal full moon. Since the super pink moon is the closest super moon to Earth this year, it will be the brightest and largest full moon in 2020.

The super pink moon will rise on Tuesday, April 7. According to the Farmers Almanac, it will begin to be visible after sunset and reach its peak brightness at 10:35 PM JST. It will appear full to the naked eye over the next few days. In the meantime, skywatchers will be able to see Venus, the Pleiades star cluster, and the upper crescent moon this weekend.

If you can't see the super pink moon tonight, you can also watch it live. (Opens in new tab)
