Meghan Markle writes her own Instagram captions for Sussex Royal

The Sussex biography Finding Freedom reveals an interesting fact: Followers of the now-defunct @SussexRoyal Instagram account often heard directly from Meghan Markle herself, especially in the early days of the account. According to authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, as reported by Town and Country (opens in new tab), Meghan and Harry often complained that as senior royals they "couldn't speak their minds" and instead communications team and were required to share news through them. So Meghan, who had to abandon her blog and personal Instagram account when she became royalty, once again gained a platform by having their own Instagram account.

"Opening the account was somewhat of a liberating experience for Meghan," an anonymous aide told Scobie and Durand.

"Especially for Meghan, who has built her own brand on Instagram and her blog; SussexRoyal meant she finally had a place to curate."

"Meghan drafted many of her posts herself in the early days," Scobie and Duran write in Finding Freedom.

"It kept Meghan occupied during the last few days of her pregnancy." Meghan and Harry also curated the look of their Instagram account, choosing the trademark @SussexRoyal dark blue and adding white borders to the photos they share.

Meghan and Harry said goodbye to their Instagram account, agreeing to no longer use the Sussex Royal name (or any other form of the word "royal") after stepping down as senior royals (opens in new tab) In their last post shared on March 30 the two thanked their followers for their "support, inspiration, and shared commitment to the good of the world," and continued You guys have been great
