Prince Charles had a difficult nanny.

Prince Charles had a difficult nanny.

Working for the royal family may seem like a dream job, but not everyone is cut out for it. In fact, when Prince Charles (opens in new tab) was a boy, he had a nanny, but the queen (opens in new tab) eventually had to fire him.

Royal author Brian Kozlowski (opens in new tab) shares this story in his new book, Long Live the Queen!13 Rules for Living from Britain's Longest Reigning Monarch (opens in new tab). (opens in new tab). The nanny in question was a woman named Helen Lightbody (a very British name for a nanny), who was reportedly very particular about Prince Charles' diet in particular (opens in new tab). Lightbody is, in fact, pictured in several photographs with Prince Charles and with the Queen (opens in new tab) when she was on the royal staff:

"[Lightbody] is said to have taken pleasure in tormenting the palace kitchen with her exacting standards. ." writes Kozlovsky of the former royal nanny. Cooking for young Chares was refused or remade solely on Nanny Lightbody's personal whims. The queen eventually got fed up and fired her.

So what finally drove the queen (open in new tab) to fire Lightbody? According to Kozlowski, it all came down to a pudding incident.

"In 1956," Kozlowski writes, "the Queen sent a simple request to the nursery to give Prince Charles, then 8, a special pudding that she thought he would like. The nanny, Lightbody, refused, taking the dessert off the menu and incurring the wrath of the royal family. No one ignores the queen's request."

This is a lesson learned.
