Hillary Clinton Comments on Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig's Academy Award Lost

Former first lady Hillary Clinton is the latest celebrity to weigh in on this year's Academy Award nominations, particularly the Internet-shattering omissions of Greta Gerwig for Best Director and Margot Robbie for Best Actress for "Barbie."

"Greta and Margot. It's hard to win at the box office and not win gold, but millions of fans love you guys," the former senator, secretary of state, and presidential candidate wrote on Instagram and X/Twitter."

"You guys are more than Keno. #HillaryBarbie," she added.

Clinton's show of public support is the latest addition to the public discourse surrounding the film, which received eight nominations Tuesday morning. Many fans of the billion-dollar film were upset that Gerwig and Robbie were not nominated in their respective categories.

Both women were still nominated in other categories. As a producer, she was nominated for Best Picture along with David Herman, Robbie Brenner, and Tom Ackerly (aka Robbie's husband). Meanwhile, Gerwig and her husband Baumbach were nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Still, as The Hollywood Reporter noted, "the optics of excluding the women most responsible for the critically acclaimed film, the biggest blockbuster of 2023, from the Best Director and Best Actress awards are not good."

At the time of writing, neither Gerwig nor Robbie had commented on the nominations. Barbie's lead actresses, America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling, who were nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively, both mentioned the omission yesterday.

"It was incredibly disappointing not to be nominated," Ferrera told Variety. 'Greta has done everything a director deserves to do. She has created this world and made something inherently worthless to most people into a global phenomenon. It feels a shame that she is not on that list." [What Margot has accomplished as an actress is truly incredible. One of the things I love about Margot as an actress is that she makes everything look so easy. Margot is a magician as an actress in front of the screen. It was one of the greatest honors of my career to witness her give an amazing performance. She brings heart, humor, depth, joy and fun to this character. In my mind, she is a master."
