Britney Spears' Father Files to Terminate Her Custody in "Major Legal Victory"
Britney Spears is one step closer to freedom; on September 7, Jamie Spears (opens in new tab) - the star's father and her conservator for 13 years - filed a petition to end her daughter's conservatorship (opens in new tab) entirely.
"Recent events relating to this conservatorship call into question whether circumstances have changed to such an extent that a basis for the establishment of a conservatorship may no longer exist," the petition seen by People states (opens in new tab).
"Ms. Spears has told this Court that she wants to regain control of her life without the safety rails of conservatorship. She wants to be able to decide when, where, and how often she will seek therapy and make decisions regarding her medical care." She wants to control the money she earns in her career and spend it without supervision or oversight. She wants to be able to get married (opens in new tab) and have babies on her own. In short, she wants to live her life the way she wants to, without being bound by conservatorship or court procedures."
Jamie Spears had previously agreed (open in new tab) to step down from her conservatorship "when the time is right," having initially refused to step down at all. But for Britney Spears' lawyer, Matthew Rosengart, this was not enough: the singer's father should resign immediately (opens in new tab), he said.
Thus, this new court filing represents a giant leap forward for Britney Spears' case. As Mr. Spears has stated time and time again, he wants what is best for his daughter. If Mr. Spears believes that he can end the conservatorship and take control of his own life, then we believe that Mr. Spears should get that chance."
Jamie Spears was willing to step down only if certain financial demands were met, but Rosengart opposed the settlement outright. After "exposing his fraudulent attempts to extract a multi-million dollar settlement and his improper scheme to take his daughter hostage, Mr. Spears effectively capitulated. There is no settlement," Rosengart told People.
"Insofar as Mr. Spears believes he can evade accountability and justice, including by agreeing to testify under oath or answering other discovery under oath, he is wrong and our investigation into his financial mismanagement and other issues will continue," he continued.
Commenting on Britney Spears' latest Instagram post (opens in new tab), fans flocked to express their joy at this new development." YOURE ABOUT TO BE FREE BABY GIRL!!!!!!" One wrote, "So excited for you babe, we're gonna get you out of there."
