Royal Family May Look 'Weak' for Keeping Silent About Harry's Memoirs, Experts Say
Never before in the history of the royal family must a book that has not yet been published have caused such a stir. But when Prince Harry announced earlier this year his intention to write a memoir to be published by the end of 2022, he said the book would be "accurate and completely true."
It has been speculated that the book will be particularly critical of Prince Charles at a time when he needs to cultivate as much goodwill as possible, as the Queen's recent health scares have made it uncertain how long she will be able to retain the throne. Not only that, but the timing of the memoir is said to be "disrespectful" because it coincides with the Queen's platinum jubilee next year. All of this, though, is just speculation: the royal family has yet to officially acknowledge or publicly comment on the book.
However, one royal author claims that this silence is intentional. Dame Colin Campbell, who has written several books on the royal family, released a video, as highlighted by Express UK, in which she said the book's release would put other royal families in a precarious position.
On the one hand, by not directly pre-empting the book's release, "the royal family is acting weak and unresponsive," she explained. On the other hand, she said, "I think what people don't realize is that an institution with a reputation for upholding the law and generally respecting rights cannot violate the rights of others just because it suits them."
Her point is that Prince Harry is now a private citizen living in the U.S. and is allowed to write whatever he wants.
"In the short term, it will look weak, at least to some people," she said. And sooner or later, give them enough rope to hang themselves, and they will."
Whether it is that cutthroat, or whether they want to avoid stirring up further animosity within the family before they know what the book is about, is still a matter of conjecture. But one thing is certain: the book will be a bomb.
