Adele tells Oprah Winfrey that her father was the reason she had "zero expectations of anyone"
Adele and her father, Mark Evans, were estranged for most of Adele's life. Evans left Adele's mother (open in new tab) when her daughter was an infant, and the star suffered greatly as a result.
Speaking to Oprah Winfrey (opens in new tab) as part of a November 14 special on "Adele: One Night Only" (opens in new tab) on CBS, Adele (opens in new tab) said that her father's "absolute lack of presence and effort" from childhood was her "biggest wound" from childhood (via BBC (opens in new tab)).
Tragically, Adele believes this damaged relationship has led to difficulties in her romantic relationships over the years." I had absolutely no expectations of anyone. Because of my father, I never fully understood what it was to be in a loving, affectionate relationship with someone."
Evans' behavior toward Adele (open in new tab) also influenced her ideas about marriage, love, and family, explaining why the idea of divorce felt like a failure for the singer." I have lived my whole life attached to my nuclear family."From a very young age, I swore to myself that if I ever had children, I would stay with them. And I tried for a really, really long time."
However, it eventually became clear that Singer was not happy in her marriage to Simon Konecki, with whom she shares a son, Angelo, and that they needed to separate, no matter how painful it was. 'I take my marriage very seriously. 'It seems to me that by getting married and then immediately divorcing (open in new tab), you're belittling your marriage. It was so quick, I'm ashamed of it." The divorce was finalized in 2021, but Adele and Konecki separated in 2018 when they married.
Happily, Adele (open in new tab) was able to bridge the gap in her relationship with her father in the last three years before his death in early 2021. He was even able to listen to her new album via video chat." His favorites were all my favorites, which was great. When he passed away, it was literally like a wound was closed."
