Camilla Parker-Bowles' flashy new title means she could be queen, royal historians believe.
Going into the details of the rules and regulations of the British Royal Family is not for the faint of heart. But that is why we have royal experts to decipher the various titles, honors, and ceremonies that the British royal family seems to always participate in. According to these royal behaviorists, Queen Elizabeth's awarding of the Order of the Garter (the highest honor for service to the royal family) to Camilla Parker Bowles is actually very significant. It could very well mean that Camilla will become queen when her husband, Prince Charles, becomes king.
If, like us, most of your knowledge of the monarchy and the rules of inheritance comes from Disney or the CW's Reign, you might have taken this for granted. Not so! Just as Prince Philip's marriage to the Queen did not make him King, so the King's wife does not automatically make him Queen.
Because public opinion at the time was negative, it had long been decided that Camilla would take the title of Princess Consort when Prince Charles ascended the throne. Now, however, royal historians believe that this gutter business is a game changer.
According to royal historian Hugo Vickers, Queen Elizabeth's granting Camilla the title of Royal Lady of the Order of the Garter is a sign of how much she respects her daughter-in-law and is basically a green light for Camilla to become a queen rather than a princess. Vickers told the Daily Mail, "It paves the way for the Duchess to become not only Queen by right, but Queen in name when Prince Charles succeeds to the throne." And Vickers is not the only royal historian who believes the duchess will receive a title upgrade. Royal biographer Penny Junner once said, "My guess is she will be queen. I don't think Prince Charles would want her to be called anything else."
If this is indeed the case, then Prince Charles has finally won his long campaign to give his wife an official title, even if neither Prince William, Prince Harry, nor the British public are overjoyed. As royal biographer Robert Lacey told Newsweek, "Privately, I could see that both brothers were seething at Prince Charles' attempts to negotiate full queen status for Camilla."
In our opinion, in the style of Lucille Bruce: good for you.
