Prince William likely upset by Prince Harry's comments about Princess Diana, royal expert says
Those hoping for an amicable reconciliation ahead of the Queen's Jubilee ceremony in June may need to reassess their expectations.
According to one royal expert, it is still too early to expect an improvement in relations between Prince William and Prince Harry.
The Daily Mail's Rebecca English said on MailPlus' Palace Confidential podcast that the Duke of Cambridge seems to find some of his brother's recent comments about his late mother quite "hurtful."
As background, the Duke of Sussex gave an interview to TODAY during the Invictus Games in The Hague, in which he said he felt Princess Diana was watching over him.
"It's as if Princess Diana has done everything for my brother. That's how I feel... She's looking out for us," he said.
Personally, I don't think the U.S.-based duke meant to say that his mother had abandoned his brother, the king, but that Prince Harry was just "settling in" at his new home with two children under the age of three, but the Brit hypothesized that Prince William may have taken it that way
"I'm not sure what he was trying to say.
"Rather than a reconciliation, the visit and interview will only reinforce the malaise that many members of the royal family have toward Harry," she said (via the Daily Star).
"Maybe not so for the Queen.
"She loves her grandchildren. Her ability to separate family from royal affairs is remarkable, but I don't think it's so for the rest of the family, especially the Prince of Wales, who is said to be at his limits with this interview and Prince William."
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visited the Queen via the UK on their way to the Netherlands.
During that fleeting visit, Prince William and his family were on a pre-planned ski vacation in France, so they were not intentionally avoiding the Sussexes, but they did not seem particularly upset to have missed them.
"What I think William found particularly hurtful were the comments Harry made about their future mother Diana," English explained.
"Harry commented that he thought Diana took care of him and the children for William.
"And now it's time for her to focus on him. I think this shows the level of Harry's resentment toward his brother.
"From William's perspective, he has made it clear in the past that he finds this sort of attempt to possess his late mother very tactless. You would think he would be quite hurt by such particular comments from Harry."
