Meghan Markle's Netflix Animated Series Canceled

Meghan Markle's Netflix Animated Series Canceled

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been incredibly busy since retiring from their royal duties in 2020.

Under the Archewell umbrella, they have launched various philanthropic initiatives and media projects, including a podcast titled Archetypes.

However, their long-awaited partnership with Netflix has hit a slight snag, as Netflix is facing increasing financial woes (basically, subscribers are dropping like flies).

To cut costs it can no longer afford, the streaming giant has canceled many of its upcoming projects, and Meghan Markle's animated series "Pearl" was unfortunately among them, the BBC reports.

The Sussexes have been planning content in partnership with Netflix since 2020, and the premise for "Pearl" was first announced in the summer of 2021. It was teased as an animated series "centered on the adventures of a 12-year-old girl who finds inspiration in various influential women throughout history."

"Like many girls her age, our heroine Pearl is on a journey of self-discovery, trying to overcome life's daily challenges," Princess Meghan said in a statement at the time. She added, "I am thrilled that Arthelwell Productions has partnered with such a powerful platform as Netflix and these amazing producers to bring you this new animated series that celebrates extraordinary women throughout history. David Furnish and I are eager to bring this extraordinary series to life and are delighted to announce it today."

Production on "Pearl" has been canceled, but a documentary series, "Heart of Invictus," is in the works. There were also reports that the royal couple is filming their trip to New York City in September 2021 for a Netflix documentary, but it is unclear how the footage will be used.
