Intruders dressed as priests break into Windsor Castle and spend the night
In a stunning breach of security, an intruder posing as a priest was not only allowed to enter the grounds of Windsor Castle (now the Queen's principal residence), but spent the night at Victoria Barracks in Windsor, the residence of the soldiers guarding the Queen while she was in Windsor. (Her Majesty was not at Windsor at the time, but at Sandringham Manor, which she visited on her 96th birthday.)
According to PEOPLE, the break-in occurred on April 26, when a man dressed as a priest "identified himself as a friend of the military chaplain of the Coldstream Guard.
"He was let in without presenting identification, where he reportedly spent the evening drinking and eating with his superiors.
Within hours, the intruder - who identified himself as "Father Cruz" - was drinking with officers at the bar and talking about how he had served in Iraq, a source told TalkTV in an interview with PEOPLE magazine.
"He told a lot of tall tales and the youngsters enjoyed his banter and drinking. It wasn't until later that he started talking about working as a test pilot for ejection seats and replacing some organs."
By 9:20 the next morning (!) a report came in that there had been an intruder in the Victoria barracks. The man was removed and "no further action was required," said a Thames Valley Police spokesman. The Queen returned from her visit to Sandringham a few hours later. (There was no breach of security at Windsor Castle and no breach of royal security, the official noted.)
However, a spokesperson for the British Army told PEOPLE that, unsurprisingly, an investigation into the security breach is currently underway. This incident is part of an ongoing investigation and it is therefore inappropriate to comment further at this time."
The Royal Navy's spokesman also noted that "the incident is part of an ongoing investigation and therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.
This is not the first security breach on royal grounds, nor is it the first in the past 365 days: in 2021, an intruder with a crossbow was arrested on the grounds of Windsor Castle, where members of the royal family, including Prince Charles and Prince Camilla, were celebrating Christmas in Windsor The incident took place. Viewers of The Crown will also remember the story about Michael Fagan, who brazenly broke into the Queen's Buckingham Palace bedroom in 1982.
