William and Kate plan to go by first name, not title, as part of monarchy modernization

Changes may soon be coming to the royal family, with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge abolishing their titles and simply being known as William and Catherine.

Reform of royal protocol seems to be underway in the aftermath of the couple's Caribbean tour, which was met with ample controversy. And in an attempt to constantly modernize the royal family, other examples of what the Mirror calls "rigid formality," such as the elimination of bowing and curtsying while on duty, may also be scrapped.

"They want to be more approachable, less formal, less rigid, and break with a lot of tradition," one source told the Mirror, which reported that "the prince is going to tear up the rule book to 'get with the times'."

After the Caribbean tour, "when the team returned to London, the couple held a debriefing with their entourage. 'They went over everything, pointing out specific things that had gone wrong and how they should improve in the future.' The general consensus was that the tour was outdated, out of step with the times, too formal and stuffy. So now, instead of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, it's more like 'Wills and Kate,' or 'Call me Wills. We want to avoid bowing and curtsying in public, be more approachable, less formal, break away from the traditional, and focus on the modern monarchy."

After a debriefing about the tour, a Mirror source said, "The general consensus on the tour was that pushing the old royal traditions was 'stupid' and the couple wished they could turn back time and do something different. If they could wave a magic wand and go back in time, they would change almost everything about their Caribbean tour."

The Sun called this modernization a "royal revolution," and said that if William became Prince of Wales upon his father Prince Charles' accession to the throne, he would hire about 70 fewer entourage members than his father, Prince Charles. He will also build a more cost-effective, less rigid team, work on "comfortable and reliable" good deeds - about five or six in all - and concentrate on short solo trips rather than longer tours like the one just made in the Caribbean, the Sun reported.

"William and Kate will modernize the way they work," one source told The Sun. 'It's a breath of fresh air. ...... I am not criticizing the way things were done in the past. But times are changing."

According to the Mirror, the Cambridges are perceived as royal stars who will "consolidate the monarchy's position worldwide and secure the Commonwealth," and they are aware that the monarchy will not survive without change. Therefore, the Mirror reports that there are plans in the future to "review the entire monarchy, including Charles and Camilla, and the rules and traditions surrounding the monarchy. But the immediate focus, the source said, is "to ensure that William and Kate can represent the future of the monarchy."
