Prince William and Kate Middleton mourn the victims of the Manchester attack.

It has been nearly five years since the people of Manchester were hit by a bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in the arena.

The shocking attack killed 22 people and injured many more. Since then, many memorials have been paid to the victims, but perhaps none more lasting than the new memorial, which officially opened on May 10.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the northern English city to remember the victims at the opening of the Glade Of Light Memorial. According to the Manchester Evening News, the memorial is a white marble "halo" inscribed with the names of the victims. There, the Duke gave a speech and the Duchess offered flowers.

In his speech, Prince William said, "I remember well the shock and sadness on the faces of those I met when I visited Manchester a few days after the atrocity. And the rawness of the emotion at the memorial service in this cathedral exactly one year later; five years on, I know that the pain and trauma felt by so many has not disappeared" (from "People").

The Cambridges also attended a reception at Manchester Cathedral, where they spoke with the victims' families and first responders.

Significantly, the Duchess wore a serene blue-gray Michael Kors coat and blue Pauline handbag (opens in new tab) with bee and honeycomb earrings in honor of Manchester's symbol, the worker bee. The bee represents the hard work of Manchester's citizens and the fact that this city is a hive of activity." It also came to represent the togetherness of our great city." Middleton also wore a pink rubber bracelet inscribed with "We Choose Love."

On Instagram, the duke wrote the poignant words, "There is comfort in remembering."

"Though they died horribly early, they lived. They changed our lives. They were loved.
